First sketch short

Hey all,

I recently posted the first short that I made for my sketch group. It's not overly hilarious, but it was nice to just get out there and shoot.

http://www.aweekofkindness.com/videos.html

It's shot in the L-Train in New York City. I used no extra lighting equipment, just shot with the light available, so things defintely have less like then they should. I used Magic Bullet, Cool Max Filter(or its it Cool Blue Max? I'm at work, can't check).

The vomit is peaches and cream oatmeal, colored with food coloring :) Probably a little too green.

Let me know what you think! Any advice?

Mike

hey man thought it was clever. Couple of the scenes got washed out for me for some reason. Looked like fun.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was having trouble with getting the lighting right in the subway. Any suggestions for a shoot like that where you're dealing with lots of flourescent background light?

Just use your flourescent setting on the cam. It won't necessarily fix it....possibly try to do more close ups and maybe bump up the back light?

Thanks Justin,

I was used a custom setting with progressive. If I set it to flourescent, but then changed it to 24p from 60i, would the flourescent setting still be helpful?

Looks good. I think you can compensate for the flatness of the image by playing with curves in your NLE. You should be able to crush those blacks a little to give your image more pop.

Pretty cool. It might be interesting if the soundtrack drops out and then changes as they jack into each other's iPods.

And to give the right look and feel for the titles, a Bold Century Gothic will have the rounded "i" dots that apple uses.

The great thing about NYC is no one even flinches when someone yaks on the L.

Uhrgl,

Yeah, tell me about it. While we were on the L, another film crew came on to share the car with us. I guess the subway is a popular location :)

It all depends on the scene file settings and how they were saved last. I say just experiment with some settings the next time you are under flourescent lighting and see what looks best. It never hurts to try new things with this camera.

it's an interesting idea.. the girl seems cute. maybe some faster cutting, more closeups on the other characters, especially when the girl shakes her head no
