(first) skater-dolly test shooting

thanks to this great forum and its members we've built our own "skater-dolly" (also known here in the forum as "acrylic skater" or "radiatus"). today we made a small (tabletop) test shooting using the hvx and (in some shots) additional macro lenses.

the shots are not perfect (no proper lighting, first time use of the skater, ...) but i want to share it with you. thanks for your input, forum!!! :dankk2:

well, actually the skater isn't complete at the moment (so its in alpha status) - the camera support construction is still missing and the labels are just for testing and not the final ones. we've shot the demo with the so called (by pstec) "steadybag".

our version of the skater is mostly made out of aluminium (10mm alu baseplate) and the support for the wheels is out of copper. the wheel support is made out of on piece of copper. the baseplate is 4mm above the surface.

so here's the pic from our skater-dolly:

your stops and starts are very good for a skater dolly. Have you any tips for dampening the motion of the wheels? and are you selling these things? Thanks. J.

thanks ;-) as i said before, it was the first time using it. so with a little bit of practice it should get better and better.

"dampening the motion of the wheels" - you mean the acceleration and deceleration? the only tip i have so far is - use a (very) calm hand and a solid as possible underground/plate/...

another "trick" would be grinding the hand/finger over the surface while pushing/stopping the dolly. you can increase the pressure gently onto the surface to make smooth(er) stops (i hope you know what i'm meaning/trying to say).

maybe there are some other hints/tricks - i hope i'll find them out with further testing.

reg. selling: if you want to build this skater on your own - all you need is this great forum. there are even cad-drawings/plan in here. i used them as basic material for our skater. i think you would get into troubles (with pstechnik) if you're going to sell this skater (patents and so on).

here's the link - in post #26 you'll find the cad drawings

Ted was the one who adopted it into a workable solution for everyone to build it on there one. Some are selling them. Check the DIY forum... Great extra tool in the filmmaking bag... combined with a diopter.. priceless for tabletop stuff.
