Update: 12.4.07 Looking for just two more comments on the editing. Then I can let it go and watch the thread fade into the distance.

p.s. I wanna free 16GB card!!!

So after owning a DVX for a year and producing nothing (zilch) I upgraded recklessly to an HVX. I LOVE IT. The P2 workflow is great.

Here's the first footage from the new camera and two 16GB P2 cards. I edited it in Final Cut Pro 5 with the titling done in Motion. (I used the FCP Training Series books to get familiarized)

Anyway, I would love feedback. Everything was auto, cuz I have yet to practice getting into the manual settings. LOTS TO LEARN..........but I love this stuff.

Cool. Its a great camera to have.

Some nice shots there.

The nighttime shots look crisp and great exposure. Some really nice bokeh.

Just watch out for your highlights in the day shots. It looks like they might have blown out in a couple of shots. You can use the waveform and scopes monitors in FCP to see how far they've blown. You see it mainly in the snow.

The sooner you can get in manual the better the images. Have lots of fun and experiment. Don't leave it a year with the HVX now !

Enjoy!

yea, read up on using the zebras and manual focus definitely. that auto focus is the worse when you just use it for every shot. the more you experiement with it the more you will learn it definately. get barry's DVD if you haven't. it helps with the learning curve.

get off auto asap and learn the scene file settings....that camera can produce alot better images for sure. probably not a bad idea to invest in the hvx book and a tripod as well....and maybe start reading up on some basic photography concepts because generally the framing of your shots needs some work...the camera was on angle about half the time too.

Thanks 'users,

I've registered the product so I should be getting the HVX book in.....a month? I just picked up a used 3066 Bogen and a set of 3181 sticks. Seems like a pretty smooth and stable setup. I had it at the event, but left it in my truck. More to move I guess.

I really appreciate the views and feedback. In addition to camera work, I would love to hear some critiques on the following:

Edits
Flow
Story
Music accompaniment
Titling placement/length

Thank you all. I'm addicted to this site,

I like the graphics that you used from motion. Edgy.

To me I like the music track (blues) but in my opinion it doesn't quite mood the video as well as maybe some other genre of music could. Maybe something more upbeat with more adrenaline.

As far as the shots of the boarders - |good coverage| |decent framing|

Story/flow | In my opinion, this video is too long. If it were
interspersed with interviews, and more depth coverage of the sport then it could retain its current length.

If it is not going for a doc feel then I would recommend cutting more than half of it out, putting all the best shots together and maybe adding a more upbeat track, etc.

I can tell that you had a story concept in mind while cutting, but it is just too long in its current format.

Use some edge but non-obnoxious fx in the video.
