Well...

I know a few people on here have been following a little on some of my ideas for a short film I've been wanting to do. Well... today we shot the first scene and it turned it pretty well :) Our set took a while to set up but I was happy with it. Here it is! Feedback welcome :)

Well there ya go! This is obviously raw footage and needs to be color treated & all that jazz. But I just wanted some feedback on the look i'm going for. How are the colors? Any suggestions? Etc? Thanks!

Well I actually came into the UserFilms looking for an update on someone elses short and surprise, brock's here. Cool.

I think the clip is very interesting. Very cool. So that's 2 for 2 very interesting shots that you've shared that I'm aware of.

So now I'm really looking forward to #3.

yea, so i'm very pleased w/ our work! the next shoot should be interesting, but if we can maintain this quality we're have a good time... it's always more fun when things almost look like what you envision in your mind
;-)

Do not worry brock. If your thread count goes up by 1 then the most important person that's capable of helping you has probably already seen your stuff and is still watching. And that may be a very quiet unassuming person, so don't sweat it. They're here believe me.

I am down for this. Don't change your attitude.

hey Brock looking very good! on your first shot did you key out the BG as we discussed before or is a different method?

In a couple of those shots, where the background is pretty far away, can I suggest using a little more DOF so that the focus is on the subject? Im not sure if that can be done in post.

For example this shot...

The background should probably be a little out of focus.
But at this resolution I dont see it being a problem doing in post.

whoops, sorry brock! i'm a clutz today!

"Anhar, we used just a white matin sheet and butcher paper pretty much, w/ some slightly tweaked settings... glad it's convincing enough that you can't really tell!! We were quite pleased w/ that method... thanks for the compliments guys"

that was my quote, not Brock!

Hey Raptor & Anhar,

I appreciate your posts. Anhar, I bought some muslin sheets with butcher paper for the flooring. I then went and bought about 12-15 light sockets and spliced them into 3 extension cords we hang from the ceiling to have as much light as possible. I set the camera to something like a shutter speed of 100 and f-stop of 2.4 or 2.8. It worked out pretty well. I was pleased with it.

Raptor, i know, i hate working with a standard lense on the camera. It's a Z1U. So basically i'm stuck with moving way back and zooming in and then tweaking the f-stops to get DOF. What program would you suggest to simulate dof with this shot or are we stuck with a frame by frame?

I like the white ambient of the first post and the way the actor blends with the background.
Raptor365, I agree, I think that the dof would enhance the shot.

Well, you could rotoscope the main actor and apply a simple lens blur, or create a z map and use that for the DOF.

Its possible, not as good as the real thing BUT its the next best thing.

I'm sure you have seen this but just in case you haven't (its tutorial number 15, scroll down)

AND that AE guru is also a DVX member right here!

Thanks again for your suggestions, help, and opinion! We really appreciate the constructive criticism to help make things as good as our equipment allows.

Yea, so *MUSLIN* sheet was the word I was looking for, LOL.

Thanks for the tutorial. That AE guy is a member here? That's pretty sweet, he seems to know his stuff.

Thanks for the comment ilauzirika.

yea, i like the lighting we got on him when he was standing in the center w/ the light just off his shoulder... and the underneath shot is great, my neck isn't feeling near as bad as i thought it would, but my head is KILLING me

Brock & Jamwest: Put me down for this one.
I hope, I hope, the script is as good as the visuals. Or at least half decent.
And, hesitate, the audio?

Do you have a deadline for this?

Hey Raptor,

Well the script is pretty good. I came up with the overall concept and wrote the beginning and end. I had one of my friends help me write the middle, and then me and my script supervisor edited it. There is no OFFICIAL deadline, but the end of this month we lose the equipment :( My personal deadline is December cuz that's when i move to LA so i think we should be able to get it done. I haven't even started editing yet. I don't like to until i have all the footage, especially with flashback scenes in a script. This is my last gung-ho if you will for my portfolio. I've put a lot of sleepless nights into trying to organize and prep all this. I just hope it turns out well. I am prepared to re-shoot things if they don't meet my own personal quality requirements (cross our fingers). But I appreciate it raptor and I will continue to post screen :)

Here are some more!

If anyone is interested this is a film with a budget of $700. That's all i had to spend. haha. Anywayz, we still have a lot to do but i think it is going to go well for that amount of money. I can only dream of one day having 50,000 to spend... Oh well, too the pictures...

Congrats. I assume it's near completion. Man, too bad it seems like no one gives a ****. Busy people. so little time, that's how it goes. I admire your dedication and the shots I'm seeing.
Again, congrats. Anyways, I have got to see it. Let me know when it wraps.
