I shot and edited this one for a movie contest. It has to be a road movie and about boxing. Tell me what you think, advices are welcome. English subs included!

I registered here to get advices on my work ... but you guys never answer back. You'd rather comment on test shot, people filming their kids or a plate than on something I worked hard to set up ...

I watched your film. Within the five minutes, I felt like I was watching it for 30 mins. It felt too long and the dialog, to me, was not interesting. Nothing about the film made it feel forward-moving to me. It felt like part of a movie, not a complete story.

Your audio is all over the place too. Scenes that are supposed to be taking place in the same room at the same moment in time should not have significant differences in room tone. When that happens, it's jarring and distracting to the viewer.

The quality of the picture was pretty bad, in my opinion. The camera you used is capable of imagery ten times better than what I saw here. Is it a matter of compression or is the original like that?

I'm okay watching a movie with no apparent plot line but there has to be something visually stimulating to keep me interested. Your film neither had a plot nor was it visually interesting.

That's how I felt watching it. Sorry to be so negative.

I thought it was pretty good. It was distracting to hear "Hurt" while they were talking in the car and I have to admit that you lost me during the montage. I'm sure it was fun to make though, and any practice is good practice. Keep it up!

Where was the natural sound. When the guy was walking through the door and the music was playing I was expecting to hear footsteps or something.
Remember this: when you have music playing it is OK to have natural sound over it.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I'll keep them in mind. It was my very first attempt in making a movie with the DVX wich is a poweful tool I might learn to use. The movie looks like **** because of the compression on the webcast site. I managed to fix up the sound problem. I'm taking good note of your comments and disjecta don't worry, your comments are ok because they are based on facts not just mean and unuseful.

Wow! That was a complete mess!

Shirin, this needs some major editing and reshoots.

I have absolutely NO idea what this movie was about. The story and pacing are all over the place. We're in archival boxing footage. We're in a car. We're all of a sudden training - I believe in the present - or future. Then we're flashing back to the past... with old sparring sessions. This was so... weird. We're in super super serious mode in the car. And then we jump to this MTV video-like montage that is just a completely different movie. The only way I can explain it is you had the tone of Million Dollar Baby in one shot, and then you jump to like... a Ludacris video. So weird. I'm sorry, but I just don't know what this was about. Actually, maybe you can explain it to me, and then I can better explain why it didn't work. What was the story you were trying to tell here?

Oh, I will tell you my favorite shot though. The one at the end, of just the feet. Very nicely lit, composed, and it just looked damn cool.

Oh, and people watch those things that you mentioned because this is a techical-heavy crowd. People on this forum are very interested in the technical side of the image and what the camera can acheive lookwise. To a lot of people, that's very important.

Scenes I liked:

- The character walking into the boxing gym. "Train me!"... "Please". Very nice look to it.
l
- Push ups in the gym - good looking shot.

- Dancing feet - good looking shot.

- Conversation in the car - very good writing. It shows history and love between the two characters. BUT, the look doesn't match the scenes in the gym.

Suggestions:

CUT all of the outdoor training scenes, they do not match the look or tone of the gym scenes.

CUT all of the old boxing footage in the begining of the film. They serve no purpose. I thought I was about to watch a boxing documentary.

Issues:

I boxed. Neither of the men in your film have boxing experience.

The ending:

I felt like at the end you should have had "to be continued" over black. There was no climax or resolution. Instead of "don't forget to keep your guard up", I would have the trainer say, "The men who beat you two years ago.... they were sent by me." WHACK!

I wanted to tell a story between a boxer and his coach, and to show little moments they had. The screenplay was more explicit but the contest is only for 5 minutes movies, I would have gotten something better in 8 minutes or maybe you guys are right I must get the opening credits out. To explain a little bit more about some of the issues of the movie : the movie was made during a contest where you only have small amount of time to make your flick. I only had an hour to shoot in the boxing gym, nobody got paid on the movie and the actors didn't really got into it. But I heard all your precious advices and gonna use them to my advantage on my next project. And Shamrock ... I know they totally suck @ boxing ;)

hey dude

well, im kinda on the other side of this, i loved it! The style of the film really lent itself well to the hand held parts. The color grading was great as well as the acting.

i guess it helps that im from montreal, hence i know french as my second language :)

good work.

the only hting i didnt like was the transition from the montage to the trainer back in the car.

Well, even though some comments were a little on the harsh side, it sounds like you're really listening and not taking things personally. That's great.

On the technical side, is there a reason that the images are so fuzzy? Are you using some kind of 35mm adapter? I agree with disjecta that just pointing the DVX somewhere should probably give you cleaner images. It doesn't look like it's just compression to me, but if it is, I'd find another place to put your future works because you'll always get the same comments about poor image quality. :)

Well with that much time it's hard to make anything good. So I'll concede. I actually think there's something in that car scene. There's something there. If you just cut between that and the gym, it might work. The opening stuff and the middle montage, however, should probably be left on the cutting room floor. Good luck.

Compression totally kills! If anybody knows a place I could store my movies in a better quality (for free of course...) can you guys please tell me ?

Well, even though some comments were a little on the harsh side, it sounds like you're really listening and not taking things personally.

That's the only way to make better things in the future, as long as critcism is based on something real and not just " you suck go take shooting lessons" I'm ok ;)

Next movie will probably be shot in Liverpool UK, so get ready for greyish sad skies ;)
