There is some great looking stuff in there, you have a lot of talent. It was very slow and the shots in the auction house and the stuff that looks like a home movie need to go. I didn't have an emotional response to any of the shots. Think of your reel as a commercial for yourself, what do your customers want to see? Remember you are just cutting some video pieces of projects you have done together, you are creating a narrative of your talent.
I love the auction shots, but maybe my intentions aren't coming across clearly. The way I juxtaposed them, I interspersed the stress of business with shots of nature and children, etc. I'll have to think about that. Maybe shortening the shots is the answer. I'd like to hear some more opinions about that.
Which shots looked like home videos? Everything was shot on HMC. The one with the girl being lit by a flashlight probably looks like lower quality because the HMC didn't respond too well to the lighting conditions (or perhaps my relative inexperience didn't prepare it for the lighting conditions -- barry's book can't arrive fast enough!)
Sometimes I get stuck with my footage. As a director, I care most about the feelings I get from an image. Quality tends to be secondary, although I know there tends to be an inherent correlation. Then again, I'm looking to do some videography, cinematography to pay the bills, so I guess I'll have to approach this differently.
