F35: First project shot with the F35 [music video]

Hi All,

It's taken a while but a music video I directed a while ago shot on the F35 got released recently so I thought I'd share.

We didn't have a lot of money to hire gear so we shot with whatever we could get.

Lenses used were some vintage zeiss photography glass that's been remounted to PL from Russian Ebay that all performed pretty well for the price.

We used the UB1-A bridge plate from petergosens.com which was awesome and super sturdy 19mm rail setup.

We recorded onto a hyperdeck shuttle at 25fps 10 bit 422 prores slog and graded in davinci resolve. It's my first time ever using dacinci resolve so I kept it very simple just trying to achieve naturalistic colours which suited the story. I used the Arri Log C to Rec 709 lut then finessed variations in colour from there.

Let me know your thoughts! And hit me up if anyone wants ungraded stills to play around with

watch out about using the arri log c lut in Resolve on F35 footage, it will clip some highlight information and blue tones get too electric and unnatural. The contrast ratio is nice though.

Enjoyed this. Reminded me a bit of BOYHOOD. Good casting and non-verbal acting. I applaud any music video that eschews the band performing.

How did you get the tracking shots around 1:38? Favorite shot is the last one. Well done!

Hi All,

Thanks for the feedback really appreciate it!

Macgregor do you suggest using the slog LUT you created for a starting point on slog footage or have you since come up with a new workflow since?

Cheers trafficn that's definitely the vibe we were going for, I love a bit of Richard Linklater action. That tracking shot is the DP sitting in the back of a van with the door swung open going handheld with the 50mm and the ac strapping him in. I added a bit of warp stabilize just because the jitter was a bit too hectic with no stabilization support on our setup. Cheers!

I didn´t design that LUT, it's an adaptation from the Slog whitepaper. So yeah, that's technically a better aproach to start grading.
I'm working now on a node taht goes from Slog/Sgamut to rec709 for better colors. Pretty exciting.

I'm grading slog right now so my ears definitely perked up on this topic. Macgregor I'm using your slog_12 lut; with just that one node the colors look punchy and natural.
How do you feel about cineon transforms at this stage on slog footage? The Impulz suite offers a cineon version for slog of every one of it's stock emulations. which can be handed to an output print stock.
I'm not clear if this improves on your slog to cineon lut (followed by the LogC or any log film lut).

I've compared a bunch of these different combinations and have not settled on something I'm definitively happy with.

What your developing sounds promising, would love to test it.
