First post. Buying a DVX100

Hello everyone. I live in Toronto, and have been wanting to purchase a DVX100 camera. I've found an ad selling the first, no-letter model (neither B nor A; "DVX100P") for $1500, used. My intent is to use a DVX100 to shoot some shorts, possibly even a quaint feature as I have just recently started on a script. Thus picture quality, audio quality, and the "film look" would be important to me.

In that case, is this used $1500 DVX100 something I should go for? Or should I simply direct myself towards the B (or A)? The options would be getting a new B from a store, which could cost up to $2500 more, or waiting for a B or A to be put up for sale, but who knows when that'll happen, if that'll happen, and for how much.

So really, what are the improvements of the A and B, how good and crucial are they, and how much are they worth?

Thank you for your help.

How many hours on the cam? Anything close to a 1000hrs, I think I myself would shy away. The original 100 had a different look [picture] than the a or b, and Im not sure if I might have liked the original better, but if its has low hours, and I needed it...i might jump on it!
How much are you saving?

Dude I was lookin at those gray market sites too. I would just go with a quality vendor like B&H. They have the camera for $2600 and that's a grand below msrp, so it really can't get much better than that. That's where I bought mine.

The 100 is a fine camera. I would personally prefer the 100a. There were many improvements made when the A came out and they are frequently listed for sale here in the marketplace. Whichever you choose, I think you'll enjoy your purchase.

tuncrypt I'm in the same boat as you. I'm in Toronto and need the cam for my film program.

I was going to get mine (a DVX100b) brand new of eBay. I was looking at a package that includes the cam (duh!), two lenses, filters, 2 cases, a couple tapes, 2 tripods, and maybe some other stuff. In the end it would be around $2700 shipping.

The seller has a killer feedback score and appears to be 110% legit, but I've heard that the seller adds on all this stuff to the total without telling you. Still it's a grand less than buying it in Toronto (Vistek has it for $3500, cam only, before taxes.)
My other concern is that only one store on eBay offers Paypal protection high enough to prevent any serious financial loss. The store I was looking at refers you to your credit card company for insurance, another offers $350 protection, and one other offers $3000. Only catch is the $3000 insured one starts at $2800 and doesn't come with as many accessories.

It's a gamble: go for the insurance and pay more when the chances of damage is slim, or save $300.

I'm still leaning towards the $2500 package. I'm a gambler. That's why my friends call me Whiskers.

I don't know if I've helped you any. I just thought I'd throw all that info out there.

I forgot to add:

I was referred to BH the other day. This place seems good but the price is still in the $3000 range. What can I say? I'm cheap. And that BH link just up there doesn't include any accessories. So that's another strike.

Yeah, that may be true - but the accessories, I'm sure are horrible. I remember buying a PVGS120 3 CCD Panasonic camera off ebay and I got a whole bunch of accessories with it. I was so happy that I'd gotten such a great deal.

It finally came and the accessories BLEW. They were horrible and were absolutely worthless. Do a little searching on the board and you'll find the same results with the DVX. You might be paying a little more, but you'll likely get a gray market camera, with no warranty and useless accessories. I'd never put my camera on a tripod that came packaged with a bunch of other things on ebay, unless I knew the brands and it was something tried and true.

Just my opinion,

Kegan
