First Official D800 Video: "Joy Ride"

In this clip it did, especially in the street scenes. Had that GH2 feel, where high iso sends the blacks to poop. Saw the same thing in the D4 clip by JenchelFrench on youtube. Time will tell what's actually happening...

edit...looking again, latitude is poor indoors too.

Perhaps with the stock GH2. Hacked is a different story and has no comparison to what i just saw.

Seemed to be rolling shutter issues during the short shaky clips following the bike. But, if it's improved to AF100/FS100-ish class I could be considering this instead of 5dmk3. Canon... your move!

Looks dark to me. Wondering if this camera lacks low light capability.

I think seasoned filmmakers usually shoot things darker than video people. Which I liked. There's way too much out there thats too bright and too overexposed. Then people complain about how the camera they used is crappy because it blew out the highlights. No, YOU blew out the highlights.

Anyway, the darker look enhances to mood of this film. Throw more light on it and you have something too mechanical, imho.

It all comes down to lightning and experience.

Few here are likely to light a street, and nor did they for this short. So this is where the cam does make a difference.

I'm happy with this image for the price, but I guess I've been teased enough by the images from the C300 (res, dr) that I'm waiting for the next big thing at a more affordable price point. It's a hobby for me, so I can wait...

How do you think video compares to 5D MkII? I wanted to seel mine I did´mt do any much work with it, I was starting to change my mind when I saw this d800 coming out, so I wonder which one will have nicest video

If you haven't used your 5DII for work much, I can't imagine getting another DSLR (and lenses to match) will get you working anymore than you have been.

+ 1

And 5dmk2 is still kinda "the" dslr video camera... as far as clients are concerned.

I sure hope the D4 doesn't crush shadow separation like this D800 does. I see crushing between DMax and Zone1 and Zone2. I'd like to see a 'normal' wedding film, shot at the beach or something with brunette bride and dark handsome groom, maybe a mix of high key and low key. This Low key only stuff is so cult-ish and trite, methinks.
Off to DPReview for a looksee...

We should remember that the finished film was almost certainly colour graded, so the contrast levels etc. may not be as extreme in-camera.

I just read on Thom Hogan's website that the new FX sensors differ from the D3/D700 in being skewed far more towards shadow detail than highlights - Thom suggests that because of this people should look to underexpose/protect highlights and then pull up the shadows in post (with still images), I wonder if this will apply to the video footage too?

To my eye, the only really objectionable part of the IQ I'm seeing out of the D4 and D800 at the moment, is the harshness with which highlights are clipping.

Not likely very useful. The compression of the video codec is not going to give up much in the shadows.

Perhaps not with 24Mbs 4:2:0 AVCHD, but 4:2:2 ProRes should offer some flexibility

oooooooooooooooooh yeeeeeeeeaeahhhh. Are you talking about recording ProRes from HDMI? I look forward to those shoot outs. Should be interesting.

I still need something that records internally, for most of my work, but external recorders should be good for others.

Yeah, I'm very intrigued to see how the external recorder/d800-d4 combo works out. If the IQ is there, i'll have the visual aesthetic and post workflow i want, all wrapped in one - and for a very fair price. But it's still the highlight clipping that's my main concern from the videos posted so far.

From the few daylight videos, it seems to be brittle on the light end. That can happen with any digital camera when over exposed, but since there are so few videos out there now, it seems to be a characteristic of the D800, rather than assuming it user error. We'll see.

Can anyone tell me if sees as same as me in this shot?

I see aliasing but I am using a 1366x768 display, is this the problem?

Can anyone with a 1920x1080 display confirm to me? Thanks.
