First Official D800 Video: "Joy Ride"

That was a wonderfully shot film with the intellectual weight of an average student film. Was expecting something more from the story, but I forgot most DSLR films don't have stories, just lots of visuals. So Docs ride motorcycles. That's something I learned from watching House, MD.

I stepped away from this video happy to see two things:

1) the motor cycle footage seemed to have very little wobble and skew, which is fantastic.
2) DSLR's didn't change the fact this film still had a proper crew. They still used lights, they still did it right. I applaud them for that.

I thought is was a little soft on the wide shots. Three years after the 5DMKII and I was expecting more detail. Maybe an external recorder would help (if they recorded internally).

Wow, you guys are a tough crowd!

I thought the visuals were pretty good, but considering the size of the crew I wouldn't have expected anything else. As far as "story" content was concerned, I know their main concern was Probably to show what the camera could do rather than the writer or director.

I don't think I'm gonna get rid of my hacked GH2 after seeing this, but it still looked pretty impressive.

To be fair, all the amazing poignant shorts and narrative works are saved for Film Festivals and for Awards seasons, so expecting anything on that level for a camera test/marketing stuff is kind of rough.

But yeah as I said in another thread, the camera is pretty good for what it is... has some of the color palettes and rendering reminiscent of Ryan Gosling's Drive (shot on Alexa) although not as sharp of course.

In this clip it did, especially in the street scenes. Had that GH2 feel, where high iso sends the blacks to poop. Saw the same thing in the D4 clip by JenchelFrench on youtube. Time will tell what's actually happening...

edit...looking again, latitude is poor indoors too.

I saw the moire in the grids on the floor and was pissed, then saw the man's suit with no moire and thought it might be just a problem for very extreme cases (but why wouldn't they edit out that grid shot then?) - then, this morning, I saw this, and thought I'd post it here: http://www.xkcd.com/1014/ (don't forget to hover above the image and read that caption too)

Thanks Norman...now all we need is a $1 resolution test, and our scientific tests should be complete.

It looked clean but honestly my T2i shoots just as good. My T2i with my 50mm Nikon 1.4 looks almost exactly. I expected a lot more detail as well. But I will probably get one to replace my D90. I like the price.

In terms of story, I was just happy that it wasn't a bunch of nature shots. The fact that it was a narrative was enough to make me happy. In terms of the visuals, it looked like DSLR video to me.

Maybe we should make a poll...

I think I may be one of a “few” that actually like it.
Both the story and the video coming out of the camera in this example.

I really liked the image and the story was pretty thin but it worked.

BUT:

With a crew and budget like that, they could have shot it with a 5D or hacked GH2 with results that looks pretty much like the same. It all comes down to lightning and experience.

The most impressive thing about this video is the lack of rolling shutter. Other than that when viewed in fullscreen the quality is pretty average, especially the darker scenes. It would've been interesting to see this recorded via HDMI out rather than in camera as seems to have been the case.
