MUSIC VIDEO: First Music Video

I have decided to film my first music video by a band named O.W.L.. They are a blues/rock band but more importantly they are friends. So, when they said they wanted me to direct their video I took on the entire project by the horns!

I first came up with the story line in which a young girl is lost in the woods and then comes across an owl that leads her out of the woods and into safety. The first question I got was "how will I get an owl?" "Where will I find the locations to film this?

What I learned from writing and directing my documentary is that you write how you want the story to come out and then trim the fat off the rest as situations arise. So, I drew up a stick figure storyboard and added in the owl and everything took place in a wooded area....

After calling numerous places for an owl I came across an animal rehabilitaor who has a trained owl that is only an hour from the house. The best part is rather than pay the $1500 from a 'Hollywood' provided animal resource company, this will only costs us "a donation" at our discrepancy.

Even for a video the time, resources, planning and money that go into it really surprised me. But I would say all-in-all this whole thing will cost under 2k. I could bring costs down more but I brought in help to make sure everything goes smooth.

For the location my dad owns a 63 acre piece of property we call 'the farm' which will house all but the owl sequences. We walked the farm and taped off all the locations we will film at with orange tape (which is awesome as it stands out super bright).

I also am renting a costume from the local rental house for my actress which looks great. I will post pics of the storyboard that I had professionally done.

The storyline shoot is next weekend (22-23 Oct) then the band films the first weekend of November. I will keep pics and posts up here if you anyone cares to see them.

ok so the owl handler that was hooking me up for the video backed out today and I ended up with no owl. I couldn't believe it. After nearly 2 months of negations and contact and an hour long drive to go meet her, have the owl taken out and a walk around the property she decided that it wasn't in her best interest to do this project now.

So, I immediately began to work to find someone new and long and behold I found a new owl handler. In the beginning I honestly didn't think I would find one let alone two owls. It is a barn owl which looks pretty cool and it has done a video and a photo shoot before. The handler or falconer is ten times nicer and better than the other lady anyway. It is funny how things just work out. This is the last week. All is on place. I have Joe from ZazaCast coming in to help me and we will be using his infamous zazaslider. The best part about the whole thing is the owl travels so we don't have to go to the owl the whole cats and crew can just go straight to the farm. Wish me luck!

Yes, good luck! It's pretty bold using cats and an owl together. (sorry, I can't resist a good typo)

hahahaha...I am sending you the file now. I am curious about the audio levels. I have been having trouble with them. Lets see if you can work with it. If not let me know.

So we wrapped up yesterday's shoot in one day whereas it was supposed to take two days. The pre-production phase really paid off utilizing a storyboard, finding a solid location, marking all the areas where we would film, what would be filmed there and how we would do it. In addition have a my shot list helped out a lot as it gave constant direction and kept the crew aware of what was coming up next and how to do each shot. If they said "what is next" or "how do you want this shot" I had an instant answer. Everything went from one shot to the next so smooth. Props to Joe from ZazaCast Films, Kelsey Sabo, and friends for backing me up and making this happen.

I will post some screen shots soon but we did take some stills. DSC_4109.jpgDSC_4124.jpgDSC_4133.jpgDSC_4136.jpgDSC_4152.jpgDSC_4170.jpgDSC_4164.jpg

thank you very much. I spent 2.5 months in pre-production making everything would go as smooth as possible.

it is 130am and I am tired as hell from editing down the footage so when it comes time for the band to add their part in it will be
just a drag and drop. It looks pretty good, especially for my first music video. kelsey RL.jpgkelsey.jpglovea and kelsey.jpgHere are some screen grabs.......

Well today I wrapped the second and last portion of the music video of the band. It went real quick and easy. We woke early before the Sun rose and got to the mountain around 8:30am. It was pretty chilly, in the low 30's but we kept moving and managed to keep warm. I took some shots of the band at a wide shot then brought the singer in closer and got a tighter medium shot then did close-ups of each individual member. All-in-all it came out cool and we are all pleased with the results.

Next thing now is to hit post production and knock it out hopefully by this weekend.

Ok, I finally finished the video. It was a pain in the editing phase because the music was so off time both on the recorded version and the live version of them playing along. Overall I think I made it work. You can see here
