First Music Video with HVX200.....

Here is a link to a music video i shot and edited for a local Pa. band
Somber. We had a small budget and the band and friends helped out.
Shot 720P 24pn and edited with FCP Studio 1. The band leader gave me
the story line and allowed me to direct and edit (he did have some input in
one edit session)

Let me know how it looks (Can only put it on My Space for now,but the
H.264 file looks much cleaner)

Thanks to all who provide advice using this camera and FCP.
Looking for feedback on the video.

Hoping for feedback on video

Hoping for feedback on video

Any feedback for the Somber video ?
The HVX200 performed well and we hoped to hear some opinions.
Thanks for the forum and to everyone who watched it on MySpace.
Trying to get a higher rez version up soon.

Hi Randy,
I'm going to say decent job on your vid. The "acting" portion was a little melodramatic and the band looked a little stilted in their performance. Overall though it had a good indie feel to it. You might want to think about getting a jib to up the production value a little, also more lighting. But that stuff costs money and will come eventually. Keep cranking out the vids!

Very low budget but want to do more...

Very low budget but want to do more...

The Breaking Ben video was done elsewhere (not to say it wouldn't be
nice to do one for them) . I had that vid up as a favorite. I get some
inspiration from the videos i see from members of this forum. Added them
to my video page so others could see them. The band Somber is now
set to release a new CD engineered and produced by a member of the
Badlees ,he also recorded Breaking Bens first EP i think.....
I learned also to advise the Band to open the case of beer AFTER the vid
is done shooting..... might have helped loosen up the guys for the band
cutaways.
We shot in a barn ,the leader wanted a dark look, and with my "lighting" i was able to give him just that..... Murky.....

Thanks for the advice and for watching!!

New HVX200 video shoot soon...

New HVX200 video shoot soon...

...and hope to get more feedback for the "Bittersweet video, how can we
move up a notch and make a better one this time. Any tips will be
helpful as usual, this camera is getting better all the time. I will also be
trying out Color on the next one, going to go for a REAL gruesome look.

Thanks for watching...

Here are some ideas to help you make the next video you do better:

First, get some wide shots, start out with say a 20mm shot (in lense terms) to establish stuff.

Use the tripod. Some of the shots looked a little off balance. You can then also pan or tilt in and out of shots. Giving your video a more fluid edit.

Get a dolly of some sort. Some of your shots good have had a better effect with a dolly from left to right.

Get some close ups, like extremely close on the guitar - like real close so we can see how many strings are on it.

Take advantage of HVX variable frame rate. Shoot some 60pn to cut to during your "storyline" shots. If you want t be real bold, try some 18pn too.

Try doing some tests of slightly over exposing and adding color correction and dropping the gamma in post!

Hope this helps, you can stop by my website and check out some music videos, if you see something you like, i can try to explain what to do!

Rock on! later

Thanks Eric, i will stop by your site. Always looking for tips. The shots you
saw off kilter were due to my operating my Merlin in less than optimal
conditions (a bit windy). Also wanted to do some wild color grading but the
band leader wanted Dark an Moody so i went with that. And after i showed
him the raw HVX footage he insisted i keep the rich color look. Go figure.
The story was bleak and i thought a washed out look would have been
better. He did agree to pulling some color out for the "death" scene however...

Thanks for watching...

Not bad for a first vid. You did a much more thorough job than me on my first. You did a lot o set-ups and I applaud that.

My favorite shots were: when the girl walks into the wood bedroom and the profile of the girl on the road with field in the back.

As for the negative feedback:
I'd say use less (or no) cross-dissolves for a song as upbeat as this -- it slows the video down a lot. I'd also move the camera more -- whether hand held, on a simple jib, or a dolly. Something to get more movement for the performance footage. The band looked a bit stale to me. I think somebody previously said "More closeups" and I want to second that notion.

Nice job overall.

Congratulation on finishing your project. In my opinion, the first thing you should do to up it up a notch (in your next project) is to learn a little more about lighting. Having good and creative lighting can make a huge difference in your overall production value...(even a dark look requires lighting...)

Lighting for HD

Lighting for HD

Thanks to 3xm and Vern for the feedback. The next video might go for
a "film noir" look. Any suggestions on how to light that? We went
for the "pools of light" low budget last time. It was shot mostly in a barn.
Always on the lookout for tutorials or books on lighting technique.
Searching for a Lowell kit maybe.

Thanks for watching,

Randy

Sorry for the late feedback, but I'm going to be shooting my first music video for a rock band here in Ohio and wanted to see what kind of example to go from. I only have my HVX w/ (4) 4GB cards, Lowel DV1 Creator kit & a Bogen/Manfrotto 701HDV fuild head tripod. I also have homemade steadicam. It isn't the greatest, but it works.

As far as your video, I really liked the cut times. It was a good pace for me to understand each scene. The girl is hot, but she didn't sell the sad/surprised look when the singer OD'ed on pills. Overall...great job and impressive for only using the bare HVX....like I'm going to use. Good luck to you!

Here's my take on your video.

-My first comment is that this band shows no personality or enthusiasm. Which makes it incredibly tough to make the video work well. To me, their performance looked like a bad show you'd see at a local bar. It's important to get the band energized, they looked lethargic.

-Mix up your shots and get creative!

-The story line was pretty vague. I didn't understand what was going on. It was a bit confusing and under developed. The only part I understood was that the guy OD'ed. You could have definitely developed the script much more, which would have really helped the video.

-The acting was sub par. The actors and actresses didn't show much enthusiasm or real emotion. Try drawing that out for your next video.

-The slow motion zooms at the end with different shots dissolving in and out were cheesy. Reminds me of a video from the 80's.

Keep at it, you have the right idea, you just need to get a bit more creative and think outside the box.
