First Music Video with DVX

Ok, before I start let me say a little abuot the situation.

I only knew about the video 3 days before we shot it. We had to do it on such short notice because the group wanted to include a performance shot of them for a dvd and then we decided to just do a real low end video. this was my first time using a DVX (we had a friend let us check out one from a university), and the green room we used we could only have it for 3 hours. So we had 3 hours total to set up everything, think of shots, shoot, pack up. But now I just ordered a dvx100 so I will be getting used to it alot more on my next projects.

Specifics on the video

shot with DVX100, 24p

Edited on premiere pro and After Effects pro

By the way, we have so many other shots that i'm going to go back and change alot of the cuts, SPECIALLY the ending because they were just being goofy but yeah, any comments/feedback will be great

its the file starting as "rough draft......"

28MB (MOV) file

i'll post grabs soon

Hey for the amount of time you had it was good!! The only thing your missing is a escalade on twenty fours & some dope ass B-BOYS!!!!

Best part: "Pump that bass." Haha.

The shots look good, but if there was something else going on that you could cut to, like a story or something, it would hold the viewer's attention much more.

Alright; heres my take

I usually dont care for Rap but this one has my attention; I think these dudes have talent; charisma, stage presence and the riff is nice. It really had me bobbing.

The bad

Is this it? Two dudes (yes; the chick is cute) in front of a wall. Not even a Greenscreen? Theres gotta be more.

I think you so far have a nice rough cut with what you have; but its like two dudes in front of the wall. No too much going on.

thanks alot for the comments, and yes they are extreamly talented, currently working on deals. Once again I must stress we had NO TIME whatsoever, but I do have at least 12 other full song shots to work in there.

As far as the green screen goes, this is what happened. It was light up pretty good, but there were still shadows. So the chroma key did not work in anyway, so I had to do a Color Difference key

Problem with color difference key, it makes them transparent so every other color was looking bad, this orangy looking color looked more like skin tone so it blended best. But it was shot on a green screen.

I extreamly enjoy working with this group, and in the near future i'll re-do this video and take more time, alot of on location shots and whatnot. Plus I just now got my own DVX. im also buying a Jib and a Dolly setup that i'm making so i'll step it up next time.

here are some grabs:

Heh, yeah one location music videos are rough. I think you should crop at least 16x9 if not 2.35 like a lot of other "studio" performance rap videos. The lighting looked pretty good. Looks like an Arri Frensel and a Lowel Open face?

Where is this green screen studio located? I would kill for a location like that.

Keep us updated.

Peace.

Photoshop the background into different colors or something, faster cuts the video itself isn't bad for a first video it's just the green screen that makes the video look uh... yeah!

But not bad play around with photoshop.

The studio is a green room at the Art instutute of illinois at shaumburg. We got a friend to sign us in.

And artistiam, if you're talking about photoshopping the whole thing, hmm, 24 frames per second times 2 and a half minutes, ehh haha. But i'll keep trying new things

"Pushing keys without seeing 'em like Stevie Wonder"

Great song, lyrics, beats.

I think the best thing you could have done given the location and time constraints would be more close-ups and extreme close-ups. Reveal more of the artist and less of the limited background.

Especially with the one girl. I would have made every shot of the girl a close-up of different parts of her body moving. If all of her shots were close-ups I would have been less distracted by the fact there was only one girl.

I also agree with escozooz. Throw a widescreen matte on there for a quick fix. That goes along with showing less of the background.

Aside from that your shots were composed well and the cuts were good. You did a nice job considering.

I just HAD to rob a liquor store.

Very boring.

Cool song.
Cool guys.
Cool girl.
Cool setup.

BROWN WALL!

But I admire how well you did in that amount of time.

Good group, hopefully you can figure something out with the greenscreen, then sooo many possibilities open up. Good job with what you have especially under the time constraints, good luck getting a better key too.

yaso

thank you. Yeah im re-cutting this version soon but in the near future, considering time and budget I will be re-shooting this video going all out on location, script, actors, ect. I seriously didn't think we were even going to shoot the video for real untill the night before. Probably the biggest cram i've ever had to pull but I had an amazing fun time. I can see those guys going very big, they are unsigned but their quality is amazing.

Yo man you need to hook me up with the model! She was phat to death! LOL! Like someone else said for the amount of time you had to shoot that it wasnt bad. I DO think you need to shoot it over when you have more time and shoot some stuff on location if you can. They talk about being in a club so find a club and shoot a scene there. I am surprised you let the green screen go to waste. I thought I was going to see an effect or something. What did you do that you needed After Effects? How much did you charge the group for doing the video on such short notice? Did you pay the model too? Just curious...

Oh another thing I noticed in the beginning, It looked like there was no light on the guys face. You should of had a soft light like a Kino Flo hitting them in the face..I know you didnt have much time but just a thought for next time. Have them wear sunglasses and you can see the light in their glasses like half of the artists you see on TV now....

Well i'm working very closely with the group and producer so I worked under the budget known as nada ($0) And the model was paid but I didnt take care of that.

Nicholasraeburn, that video you did is amazing, I am a grean fan of it, believe it or not I was going to do something somewaht like that with mine but the lighting had so many little erroes on it that I could not even do chroma key, I had to do a color difference key which made it transparent with an orange background which simulates skin color.

As a matter of fact we just talked about it recently and we will be re-shooting this video in december, we already have a club reserved and whatnot. I'll be starting on storyboards soon but first I have two music videos to shoot.

Thanks reality i think youd be surprised at how good a key you can pull from DV footage (i used keylight built into AE 6.5 pro) and my greenscreen setup was so quick the fabric was full of wrinkles and hotspots. Sometimes you gotta cheat and do a little bit of roto but it would be cool to see your video revamped with some extra background elements.

I agree with everything everyone has said before.

My major criticism is that just about every shot is a medium close up. Even if you're just shooting in front of a wall, you can mix it up with your framing. Get in tight on that mic, and how about a really close up shot of some of the model's finer attributes?
