F5: First Impressions and Vulnerabilities

As a previously dudded F3 owner I wanted to make sure that everything was above board with the new F5. I've gone over the construction with the proverbial tooth comb because that's where the F3 fell down (ie) dust-prone sensor, erognomics, view finder, pins on PL mount (etc). The F5 is a great improvement, however there is one vulnerability which I consider as a hasty, last-minute thought by Sony. It's the placement of the WiFi socket. (By the way, I can't get the dongle to work either.)

If you (see below) you'll discover fragile wires exposed behind the cheap plastic cover and that is ridiculous when you consider how robust the rest of the camera is. If the WiFi dongle was originally designed for projectors, why improvise with it and stick it in a $17,000 camera? That's a real vulnerability.

(In other findings)
* The Sony LCD EVF to be far better than the Alphatron.
* XAVC files convert really well in FCPX.
* My old anamorphic lenses are so crisp with the higher resolution.
* Auto focus would be nice for the SCL-Z18X140.
* A dedicated microphone mount would've been good.
* The plug on the EVF is vulnerable.
* It's great to rid myself of an external recorder.
* The mounting holes are brilliant.
* The BC-L90 charger is over-priced for what it does.
* At the most, F5 users should be permitted to record 4K XAVC internally compressed.
(Come on Sony. We all know it has the capacity, like the hidden CBK-RGB01 on the F3.)

Overly simplified, it takes 4 times the processing power in specific parts of the signal chain to record 4K to SxS. Also, higher frame rates require faster processors.

I think it's a safe bet they saved money (and therefore made more profit) on the F5 by having a slower processor or less of them.
