Long time lurker first time poster. Back in the day I used the Sony DSR-300A DVCAM and the past 8 or so years I used the HMC150 and Canon DSLRs for years doing corporate and social events and was very excited for the DVX200. At first I didn't like the factory scene files (like a lot of people around here). I first used the DVX200 as my main camera for a professional gig with the with the factory settings in a run and gun corporate shoot in October with mixed results. It was in and around a convention center with a thousand different lighting scenarios and some shots were better than others. I had to spend hours color correcting the skin tones on some shots. After that, when shoots came up I found myself going back to my trusty, but flat, point-and-shoot HMC150 rather than deal with the headache.
I did love the larger sensor, the fixed lens with the depth of field that the DVX200 provided, and I spent a lot of money on it and didn't want to give up. Finally, a non paying hobby shoot just came up where the DVX200 would be perfect. I was to do an intro for a series of web videos about guns (!) and then they wanted some slow motion, so I was like "Here's my chance!"
First, a HUGE Thank you to Barry's scene files which you find on this page: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...corder&p=1986596838&highlight=#post1986596838
Those were a game changer.
So the producers of this web channel were using a sony camcorder, a go pro and a drone to produce their videos and wanted to add a bit more. So I brought my DVX200 to the last shoot as a secondary camera and while they continued as they usually do, the DVX200 just really brings it up a level. I'll break it down for you as best I can: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1hZBzPNuYs
Cam Settings: FHD 1080 50M with Variable Frame Rate
INTRO:
00:00 to 13 sec - I used macro mode with the OIS feature. Barry Scene File: SCN3/SCENE3 is Portrait 60FPS- Awesome! To be able to be zoomed in and get some fluid movements in macro from my shoulder was great! The OIS is really impressive so far. (Ugh didn't keep track of shutter speed sorry).
35 - 40 sec - Again Macro mode with OIS. Barry Scene File: SCN2/SCENE2 is Scenery 30FPS, Shutter speed is 1/250 here on out - Again very happy with the movements and the colors are great. Zero color correction.
1:55 - 1:57 - Barry SCENE 2 (for the rest of the shoot) 120FPS but sped up 4X in FCPX to make it regular speed.
2:00 - 120 FPS Very happy with this! I can totally use this on event videos like weddings of people dancing. Yeah you can slow it down in the computer but seems very fluid and natural when you shoot it
2:04 - 120 FPS but slowed down 4X in FCPX
2:10 - 120 FPS but sped up 4X in FCPX
2:12 - 120 FPS
2:23 - 120 FPS but sped up 4X in FCPX
2:29 - 120 FPS
So anyway I just wanted to say that FINALLY after months of some frustration and disappointment (probably due to my own ineptitude!) I'm confident enough to shoot my second corporate shoot this upcoming week. I'm sorry for the long post but hope this is helpful to somebody out there either who bought the DVX200 or is thinking about it. Many people have said it here better than I could: the DVX200 is a versatile camera with plenty of upside.
Thanks again to Barry for the scene files! You do the Lord's work.
Sincerely,
Joe
