First feature film shot with HVX200

RR... I thought went to the home of the national champs UofTexas...

He did.
He just didn't finish.
If I'm not mistaken he only had one class left to go.

So he technically didn't graduate from film school - but he definitely went to film school.

Thanks for the correction on RR (I did not know this)

Gary is right; you are what you make of yourself. School or No School; it's in your hands.

There's so many stories on Spielberg... the story I heard was that some teacher at Long Beach State made some comment to him... and that Spielberg said he'd never support the school as long as that teacher was there... maybe just an urban legend...

Speilberg actually finished the school in 2002:)

"Spielberg continued: "I wanted to accomplish this for many years as a 'thank you' to my parents for giving me the opportunity for an education and a career, and as a personal note for my own family - and young people everywhere - about the importance of achieving their college education goals."

BBC News.

I think it supports your point though.
It's unimportant whether or not he went to film school - we can all agree he knows what he's doing.

(well, most of us can agree anyhow - I'm sure someone will pipe up now saying RR has no idea what he's doing)
:)

We can also agree that he wanted to get into a school and he obviously had some common sense. He found one that would accept him. He didn't say: I don't need this, I am Steven Spielberg!

i think it's important to go to a film school to realize that you don't need to go to a film school .... film school is like a big machine, you put 100 imaginative students at the entrance of the machine, and at the exit you get 100 clones speaking about pixels count and shooting kung fu movies ....

Hey.. don't knock kungfu films. I plan on clogging the pipe with a few myself. A couple instructional DVDs on my style. You can read up on my sifu at www.vingtsun.cc. As wasll as some HK style short action scenes.. admittedly for a comedy show... but will be played straight.. In contrast to Brokeback sidekick mountain with Steven Segal and Tom Cruise.

I like someone like John Waters. He went to film school but was then kicked out for selling acid.. so then he went out and shot.. Pink Flamingo's with his tuition money.... Or something like that.

Some people who went to film school make good movies, some make bad movies and some don´t do any movies.

Some people who didn´t go to film school make good movies, some make bad movies and some don´t do any movies.

This is leading nowhere.

You should visit a film school and ask perhaps. There are many important schools in Paris. They certainly don't focus on pixels and slow motion effects.

You know what is weird here? It used to be when somebody posted that they did something with the DVx100B, everybody did a "That's Great Man", or that really great or something that was supportive. I have just finished reading through this and frankly I am disheartened.

He, the filmmaker may have been a beginner, but from the looks of his rig, he sort of had a clue. He did something that took courage, and the willingness, and the insight to make it happen. I can't believe how negative this whole thread is. Sad.

Best,

Jan

Sorry if we don't sound overly enthusiastic over a shoot with your product, but sometimes we want to discuss education for filmmakers or martial arts.

Hi,

It isn't the stuff about the film school and it isn't about it being done on my product, it is just the overall feeling of no support for the effort.

That's the disappointing part. This seems to have dwindeled into the nit-picky let's drag everyone's effort down site. And that is what saddens me.

It used to be fun to read folks reactions to a filmmaking effort.

Best,

jan

Some people need film school others don't it all depends on how your brain is wired. Just because you don't go school doesn't mean you don't need to learn and study. There are plenty of DVD's, Books, and other resources available to anyone who wants to lean anything. Having the disipline to learn is the argument here not how you learn. Film schools provide an easy access to talent and information. but that does not mean that talent and information can't be found elsewhere. It just take more effort. Making a Movie will help you realize that there is a lot to know and can direct your attention toward the topics that you need help with. It is a great tool toward learning the craft.

I think anyone who says they don't need books, advice or instruction is really limiting themselves to their full potential. Knowing the rules helps you break the rules. It also helps you get what is in your head out and onto the screen.

I am sure somebody some place can pick up a camera and shoot a great film without any prior knowlege of film making. The real question you have to ask yourself is that person you?

Film School doesn't make filmmakers passion, talent and ambition does. If you ask me, Film School is the easy safe road for most. If you have the time and can afford it you would be crazy not to go. Scratching up the info on your own and making it all come together, now that is hard.

But that doesn't apply to people who don't thrive in a structured academic eviroment teaching system. Some people just learn in a different way. The schools can't address every learing disipline or style so it's up to the person to decide for themselves what the best path toward success is.

And at the end of the day you need talent. Or you are just wasting your time and should find a more suitable occupation that will allow you to grow and prosper. Accepting ones limitations is the toughest thing for anyone to do.

Thanks NBC, I am coming along. the straight out leg for another 3 weeks is feeling boring, but I am glad it wasn't worse, and I do get a motorized scooter for NAB. ;-)
