F5: First F5 Footage: The Contract

Very yellow in that opening car scene but to be expected with sodium vapour street lights. Good quality, good production. Crisp. Good lighting job.

No mention if it was 2k XAVC or RAW, but I'm sure it will come out soon. They mentioned rating the cameras ISO at 1250, so not sure if this was HG or SLOG2?

The fireplace scene is amazing, shows the range of the F5 indeed.

Plasma lights - 400w lighting up half a block! Gotta get me some of those!

Beautiful! I wonder exactly what that was too but man, that is fantastic. The skintones are ridiculous on these cameras. Yikes

Cameras that see in the dark, you know, you gotta take care that you don't see TOO much. The night car stuff, the stores and streetlights overpower the actors. Nitpicking, of course.

The burned highlights in the kitchen could have looked better, but I suspect they got clipped in the color correction and not in camera. I also sense it was sharpened a little bit, not my particular taste but whatever.

The Hive plasma pars are nice, but they don't put out THAT much. They're 240W and put out like a 400 joker. On the other hand, when you're shooting 1250, a 400 Joker goes pretty far.

The cinematography was too distracting to me, I felt like they picked 2 lenses and stuck with them and thats it. I can't really judge anything else from a vimeo upload. Lighting was ok, but the KEY lights were always over exposing. Again distracting. I never will understand why Sony keeps giving new cameras to students to "show off" their work... sorta backwards. You need a GOOD cinematographer to show off dynamic range. The lighting didn't do the camera justice I guess in my eyes. Also a little too sharp feeling as well. but that could be for a billion different reasons. RAW or TIFF files please!

If it looks good, how much of that can we tell is the camera and how much is the friggin arri ultra prime lenses they used?

Hmm.
well, i find it nicely done. But i find it bad marketing. This doesn't get me to trade my F3 as much as wish it did... Especially on the close up shot inside the car. (a 85mm i presume?) his face once get jello. And that's what bugs me. Jello. So, 55 it'll be then... ( wallet screems ouch;-)

On the other hand what it does show that we all have access cameras that really really are very very good... From a d800 to a used f3,to a red, to a f5/55, Alexa, and f65... Whatever you wallet can get you ;-))

Looks good to me, always nice to see actual performances in a camera test. It's nothing you couldn't manage on an SLOGged F3, but that isn't really the point of these cameras. Interesting that they rated the camera at ISO 1200, I wonder if the highlights on his beard that blew out in the kitchen scene, would have been retained if the camera had been rated at ISO 2000 like the product literature we've seen so far says?

I think they rated too low, the colorist applied the LUT, and the highlights blew out in the color session. I think this because it looks the same as when I've done it in Resolve, there's a particular look when it's the LUT that clips the highlights.

If it's Resolve and you do this, you can apply a soft clip curve to the shot and then the highlights will look much better.

All speculation.

I agree, the highlights are a little hot, but there's enough evidence in the footage to see that the camera will be a top performer. It's worth noting this was shot in HD with the XAVC codec. It will be interesting to find out what the gamma settings were.

I like the look in the car at the beginning. But as longer the film is running i felt that this is just one more camera which makes nice pictures, if u can handle it. For me as an indepentend filmer , i'm not sure if this camera is 16k worth for me .
I already had a look on the F5 too and used my Zacuto EVF on it and i was sure , if i would buy this camera i had to buy one of the new Sony EVF's too , so another 5k or 6k .
I'm not a big technic freak but if i compare footage from the F5 and the BMC ,then i think about the pricepoint and i accept that working with the bmc camera is not so comfortable but for 3k ?

The literature has mislead many people as those were SLOG2 rated ISO's. The native ISO is 500 for the F55 and 8000 for the F5. Higher once you use newer HG modes, and even higher once you switch to slog2 mode.

Still no indication if it was shot using XAVC or RAW and if HG or slog mode was used.

Out of curiousity, whats the best 'F3' footage or project anyone has seen?

For full crew/s-log workflow examples, the best I've seen so far is the Key & Peele episodes. For no budget, non s-log and completely in-camera color (no grading) example I would say this is the best: https://vimeo.com/21698583

As far as this short...really well done. But absolutely convinces me 100% that they could have used the F3 and we wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

The true value of this camera will be realised when people start using it in 4k or shoot high frame rate- that is once the firmware is upgraded.
