First DVX shots

I edited up some 24p footage of skating me and my friends did today. This is my second day of owning the DVX100b so some of the clips varied in look because I was experimenting with the different options . What do you guys think of the footage? And by the way. The snowstorm was at 8 this morning and the sunshine was at 10:30 - crazy weather huh?

Great footage! I will be purchasing my 100B very soon.

I loved the first two shots, very 'filmatic'.

I wonder how long it will be before the DVX becomes the skateboarding industry standard and everyone's footage starts to look the same again? :( ......In any case, spectacular job filming: great composition, loved the tracking shots on the box..especially the backtail.....What camera settings did you use? Any color correction?

All of these shots were great, especially for first shots.

You must have been pretty familiar with the camera, though. Otherwise, these were spectacular for your first time.

The entire video was great. It will be saved (and I don't save a lot of videos).

Oh, and yes - the settings? Looked like pretty high shutter on a few of them. OH! And that shot of the plane - that seemed slowed down, correct? That was a great shot. I'd love to hear your processes of shooting.

Thanks a lot guys! No, this is the second day I have ever even seen the DVX in real life. up until I bought it I had read a lot of the threads here on dvxuser. I wish Barry's DVD and Book would come soon so I can take full advantage of all its features. The only real experience I have with filmmaking is that I owned a Canon GL2 for about 2 months last summer before I sold it and got into photography.

Ok for the settings...First off all of this was shot on 24p(Adv.) No color correction was done to any of the footage, all of it was done in camera. Manual focus and iris was used with combination of the nd filter at times. I usually kept the shutter speed at 1/60 but for the snow shot that was 1/500 and I think a few others might have been 1/120.

Also, the plane shot wasn't slowed down. Thats how fast it was really going.
Some of these were shot on a tripod of course. The tracking ones of the bench I put the user manual on my board and put the dvx on it and just tracked the shot by moving my board. (The manual was to prop it up a bit.) That one shot towarsd the end where he does the splits on the doube set I put my camera on the tripod, extended the legs and held it way up, kind of like a crane I guess. Thanks again for the comments!

WOW man, the opening shot on the skateboard was really sweet using the 1/500th shutter speed was a good choice there, snow clouds and snow give video a really nice look as the light is so uniform.

Some good shot choices also and you inspired me to get a skateboard to which I will mount a tripod head, for a quick on the fly low dolly shot it was pretty good, nice on a flat surface and just a few seconds at a time would work.

Some of the shots had a videoish look, esp scene where guy jumps down stairs and falls. I would try these shots at 1/48 instead of 1/60. There was one shot that looked a little washed out, guy with beanie wall in bg.

Also I would invest in a polarizer. Try adding a little contrast to these in post.

The compression really takes out a lot of contrast because on my tv the blacks are black. I plan on getting a hoya polarizer pretty soon ( a have a few for my dslr lenses but none of them are 72mm.)

Congrats with you new camera - just bought a 'Bee' myself 2-3 weeks ago and I'm loving it. I loved your footage - and as others have said - the first clip of the skateboard with the snow looked really nice with the 1/500th shutter for that strobe-look. The music is well chosen instead of the traditional skate-rock and I really like the fact that the singer starts singing as one of the guys falls *ouch*. I think this footage proves that you've got a great eye for cinematography and I'll be looking forward for more footage from you in the future.

I dont think it will ever be the standard, for rollerblading and skateboarding I think 60i will always be the standard for them, 60p might take over.

Good work. Nice thinking-on-your-feet. You have a great camera and some great vision, keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the kind comments. This was shot in letterbox mode and I added a 1.85:1 mask to the the project in Vegas.
