First DVX shoot with some CC

Hey guys,
Well i've been playing with the DVX for a little while since me and my partner got one just over a month ago, and i've been wanting to shoot something ever since. We got a unique opportunity to do a shoot for a new magazine which is starting up here in Toronto, they just wanted a voyuer type interview scene with some girls in different outfits being asked different questions. So all we had for lighting was some home depot flood lights. Without a preview monitor the lcd gave me a very different look than I was seeing which I found out later watching the tape. So now i'm just trying to do CC for the first time to make it look better. Here are the first CC grabs i've worked on. I will have some test clips soon but any input would be great. Thanks!

If there are any probs viewing grabs let me know, i'm using photobucket just because my server is down. Cheers!

what colour temp are those floods that you have....im not a big fan of either of them....the bright ones have all the detail washed out and the blacks are green...and in the first ones....the mustard yellow isn't that appealing to me....i think something with crushed blacks would look nice, imo...

Wow, for having such miscolored original footage, you've actually achieved a pretty usable look with the CC. Some of your CC definitely blows out the image, but I think it is fitting. I don't understand what the point/story of this video could possibly be, so it's kind of hard to say exactly how fitting the coloration actually is.

The last grab would have to be my least favorite... looks like the whites on that grab are not even close to the level of the whites on the other grabs, the blacks are not as black as the others, and the red in the face is too pronounced.
Oh, and that 3rd grab is bad as well, but not because of you, rather because that girl's acid-washed jean skirt is absolutely hideous (don't tell her I said that!).

Oh, and judging by the noise pattern in the shadows, it looks like you'll probably have some abnormal looking noise movement... specifically in the spots where the shadows meet the lit areas on the walls.

lol thanks for the feedback. Yea damn lcd was showing me a completly different picture. This is my first time with CC pretty much and i've just been playing with the image in Vegas. I exported a short clip and there is some abnormal noise, i'm just trying to reach a point when its in between. I also noticed this weird flicker when the girls move on my tv, not sure what this is from, its like the edges only. Its hard to explain really. Oh about the concept of the video, don't ask me either lol, they guy who is producing all this hasn't really filled us in. But his mag which he is 'trying' to launch has something to do with girls I take it so hes doing interviews with them and then we have another scene yet to shoot when we follow them to different clubs and stuff, i'm just doing what i'm told lol. But he wants the interview scene to look like an amatuer tape or something, so we did all of cam movement and quick zooming ect. Just trying to make it look better first and then worry about the editing lol. I'll try to post some test clips soon. Cheers!

That flicker when the girls move may be from a couple things, but the most likely thing I can think of is that you maybe filmed in 24p and rendered in 30p or 60i, or visa versa... make sure your project settings in Vegas match your source video settings. If it's not that, try to upload some footage for an actual visual example of what's going on.
Sounds like you got yourself into an interesting project there!

Well I think it is right, but this is my first time using vegas. Here are some screen shots of my project settings and my rendering settings..

The almost blue coloured flicker when the people move is only seen on a tv for some reason, it just looks weird on the tv. Is there anyway to mess up the footage when capturing too?

Thanks for the input so far, and yes it is quite the interesting project ;)

Under the project settings, set your full resolution render quality to best, same under the audio tab (you may also want to set it to 48kHz sampling rate if you are outputting mostly to DVD), and select start all new projects with these settings. One thing that could possibly be causing this is the deinterlacing of progressive footage, so also set the deinterlace method to none. Make sure your DVD mpeg-2 files are also rendering to 24p. Try it like that and check the results.

mustard yellow doesn't suit the skin tones of any of the women - it kind of makes them look sickly. I would definitely ditch it. The crushed black look is a little too extreme, especially for these ladies as it highlights the lines in their faces and makes them appear older than they most likely are. I would try and soften the lighting in post in some way and go with a more pastel color pallete, still keep your blacks solid though.

I think pasty's CC is a good jumping off point. Defined, but softer

Hey pasty, I like your CC, is there any way I can try to duplicate that in Vegas or do I just have to try to figure it out by eye? I started a new project and changed those settings, I'll do another test and see if that gets rid of the flicker. Also where are the settings for dvd? I've been just exporting avi's and then using nero to transcode and burn. Any help with that would be really appreciated. Thanks allot for the help so far guys!

Gosh, I should've saved that project so I could remember what I did. First off, though, click here to download and install a nice free 6 channel color corrector. I used that as the very first thing, then almost completely desaturated the yellow channel with that plugin. Then I pulled in some color curves (or Magic Bullet if you have that) and did a basic, but light curve to pull some of the darks darker... I didn't push the lights much lighter.
If you have a tough time with it, I'll just start a new project, do it again, and send you the .veg file.

As for the DVD output, in the "save as type" field of the export settings, select MainConcept mpeg-2 (then just select a matching template or create your own) for your output. You currently have selected "Video For Windows: avi" or whatever it says. Anyway, if you render your mpeg2 from vegas, you should be able to easily do it correctly... Nero is probably taking your 24p video and turning into 60i which is most likely where the problem is coming from (although I'm not sure because I don't know how Nero transcodes).

So keep testing and if you are still having problems, keep us updated!
