First D90 project

Hello all,
I just got my D90 and love it so far. I just finished my first small project with it but am now running into some post work flow issues. I have made my entire edit in FCP6 and have everything the way I want it but can not seem to export it with a usable quality. I have now read that I should have transcoded my avi files first but since that can not be done now what can I do to salvage my work?

If anyone has any advice or help it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
JPD

I'm not sure what you mean by "usable quality" so it's difficult to guess what needs to change. Still, here are two options:

1. Download the D90 Rescaler plugin here. Create a second sequence with the desired output format, drop a slug into the timeline, add the D90 Rescaler to the slug, and add your entire AVI sequence into the well on the D90 Rescaler. Change the length of the slug to match your original sequence and render.

2. You could treat your project as if you'd edited with proxies. Transcode all the AVI files into RS422 files with the same file names as the original AVi's then reconnect your clips in FCP to the new files and render.

Hope this helps,

I have tried using the D90 Upscaler plugin ( I do not want to lose the 10% quality) but am having issues with that. I read the entire article on DSLRHD and the first time I got purple artifact lines on my padding, then when I tryed to do it again after I drag the finished sequence to the well and render it nothing has happend.

sorry. i think i've started an internet rumor by mistake. you don't lose any 10% that wasn't already lost, if your master is 720p the rescaler works perfectly. it just distributes the noise from aliasing across the image, it can look a tiny bit softer but that's how it's supposed to look. any extra detail you saw before was aliasing and not real detail. the upscaler is for scaling up footage, it doesn't increase the quality if your final format is 720p or smaller.

With my project I actually am thrilled with the results without having to use any of the plugins to reduce the stairstepping. My biggest issue now is why my footage is so small. Am I just an idiot and when it says 1280x720 that refers to it with the padding?

what padding? what's your sequence settings?

This is the full size of my video.

currently my sequence is just standard NTSC which I know is wrong, what should it be at for the codec of a D90?

how do you expect to get 1280x720 in a 720x480 sequence, with letterboxing removing 25% too? i like to use the prores 1280x720p24 preset changing the timebase to 24. by the way neither the rescaler nor the upscaler work unless the original sequence is 1280x720.

I am in the process of rendering now but I can see that I have to manually stretch each clip to fit the new sequence settings. To make sure I do not have to do this again would the answer be to transcode my clips prior to editing them?

Sorry for all the questions and confusing as I stated this is my first time working with a D90 and any other codec aside from NTSC/DVCPROHD

you shouldn't have to stretch and no transcoding is necessary. one question though: did you really shoot 720p?

yeah check your D90 settings, or check out the original footage and make sure its 720p. I'd be so pissed if I shot in the wrong settings...Lesson learned if it happens...

Already checked and everything was in the right setting, for some reason under the motion tab>basic motion every clip is only at 56% so I had to just scale them all back up. I am guessing this is because I originally edited in a 720x480 timeline. Hopefully with my next project this isnt such a pain in the ass. I will post the project when it is finished!

select all, modify, scale or conform to sequence. nothing is really a pain in the ass if you know how to handle it.
