First crack at masking / rotoscoping.

In the video you will see 2 dogs. They are the same dog. 2 separate shots from the same angle. Most of the masking was acheived with an 8 point garbage mask but i did have to rotoscope about a second worth when stuff overlapped. Kinda ruff still but i'm figuring it out. BTW tracing by hand SUCKS!!! even with my drawing tablet. Is there a better/easier way????

oh well. pound away and tell me what i did wrong.....

P.S. the fade in of me and the dog halfway through was meant to be for effect, not to look realistic.

fortunately I didn't actually read your post all the way through so when I watched it I was like... huh, I don't see anything! I guess that's a good thing as I was surprised when you said there was really only one dog! ;-)

I don't see them overlapping ever, not even in shadow/reflection. Are you talking about when the guy's fingers come into frame? I can see the edging on that, but it moves so fast that it's no real bother.

the scene with the top dog was the majority of what you saw. i masked in the bottom dog using an 8 point garbage matte in FCP. about half way through you see me walk in front of the camera and in front of the bottom dog. now the problem was that this was part of the top dog scene. so i had to take that portion of the clip and export as an image sequence. then i opened each frame in photoshop and created a mask by hand around my hand/arms/etc. then i brought the images back into FCP and layed them on top. if you look close you will see my weak masking job on this part. as for the rest, it looks good because the two dogs never overlapped. just a basic split screen type of effect....

Yeah, that's what I thought. Looks pretty good. If you were able to desaturate the mask edge on the fingers you might almost be able to sell it as backlighting.

hard to tell; at this res but at my computer I was like..."what's he talkin about? Nothing's happening! This sucks!"...then I read your post and was like..."Wow, holy ****, this guy is awsome."

I couldn't see the seams. Nice job.

I have FCP but I use After effects 6.5. You take two layers of the same video or your two different shots and make a mask with the pen tool and use key frames. I have found this easier then the eight point mask. The mask in FCP is hard to move and to see sometimes.

do you know an easier way than tracing every frame? what about motion tracking in AE?

My problem with it is that it's a bit too obvious that it's a mask - especially when the reflections in the wooden floor move - well reflections dont move but you get my drift - anyways, I was like "holy **** there's a mask there, wtf" (I didn't read the post either, haha)

I just thought originally that you rotoed yourself in for some wierdass reason - but when the dogs start MOVING - then we've got a problem, my friend.

Anywho-keep experimenting :)

ya, i see what you mean now that i watch it again. i guess one thing i need to do is train my eye a little better. i didn't even pick that out till you said something...thank you.

how could it be done better? i saw your work in the music video which is what inspired me to do this in the first place. i'm clay, mold me.
