first concept video

The best thing is that it's a great song. It's hard to make a compelling video out of an average song. So you picked a good song to shoot.

The shots are cool. I like the close ups the best. Some of the wide shots are a little dark, but I know you're going to mix it up with other stuff. But great job on the close ups- they look great. I dig the slightly overhead shots of the drummer cause he's lit the brightest for that setup and it looks cool.

2 questions: what kind of lights were behind the band, and what shutter speed did you use?

Wow. Great footage. Especially in a dark setting. I originally came into this thread to assert that music videos just dont work without some sort of story juxtaposing the "studio band" foootage. After reading your initial comments on this issue I soon realize you're not done with the video. Well, here's what I have to say. I was quite impressed by the footage I saw during the, I'll call it, "studio" footage. The two flood lights from below create a unique contrast from what flood lighting behind a person (or persons) is usually meant to create. Instead of a silhuette effect that usually comes from, for the most part, background lighting, you instead use this lighting effect for the purpose of reflecting a certain perspective of a member of the audience during a live show (or so I felt). For the most part I felt the footage you got from this studio sequence to cover pretty much all ground, in terms of a single location sequence. You had a few really impressive shots (most notably a few overhead, and a lot of shots going from bandmate to bandmate that worked extremely well due to the precise editing job). Overall a great job and I can't wait to see the final product. -Chris

I really liked the song, one of the reasons why I watched the entire video.
I think you did a good job.

thanks for the replies so far it means alot to here what everyone thinks

i agree that its a great song the band is called Brighten you can check them out at http://www.myspace.com/wearebrighten

the video was shot using small work lights. we used two in back of the band and two in front of the band

i was told to shoot the video at 6:30 pm and i had to be at the shoot by 7:00 pm so it was extremely run and gun

I am always curious about shooting music videos. I have never done one so I will ask you this question.

Did you use multiple cameras? and if not how does one capture the band from so many angles singing their song, jumping around, and yet still have flawless blocking?

Great song and footage. Enjoyed it. I was wondering about the angle in which you placed the front lights. I see the back ones which look like each is 500W. Did you have the front ones slightly above the band's heads? It's interesting to me that you can't see the back wall or anything with all 4 lights. It seems that everytime I shoot at night time the colors get very desaturated. Can you also refer to your camera settings during the shoot? Thanks!

I liked the song very much and the tempo was pleasing. I watched the video a couple of times and you did a good job of capturing their essence and story. I think that the strongest points of message in the video are the song it self and the eyes of the lead singer. The only thing is that you taunt us with the close ups but never give us an extreme closeup of his eyes, maybe in slowmo as he looks into the camera but at least a little longer stare into the camera,(you get close a couple of times). The closeness relationship of story that is created is from only the lead singers closeups and his inviting look and this should be exploited a little more and I beleive this would create a stronger bond for the audience. Good job of editing and its exciting and easy to watch, I liked the video.

mt:) .

RGB - i did not use multiple cameras. like most video shoots the band played the song several times so we could capture different angles.

jgastelb - two people were each holding a flood light that was postioned on the singer/bassist for the front lights. my scene file settings were set to default and my shutter was at 1/24 i believe.

thanks!
