First 5D3-Raw Full Length Music Video?

I've been testing raw for a while now, so was comfortable enough to take it on a paid gig. I was going to be working with very, very low light situations (150w diffused key light, 250w diffused back light, some practicals), so left the Reds at home and brought out the 5D3 and a few Magic Lantern-formatted cards.

This is what I came up with:

The only trouble I ran into was that Power-off was switched to auto in the Canon menu. Once that was disabled, everything else was a breeze. High ISOs kept production costs down to a measly $600. These are exciting times for the 1-man crew!

That was fun!

What ISO did you shoot at? What was your approach to noise reduction and sharpening?

hmhmhm..

sorry, but I am not convinced.. maybe is high ISO killing your latitude.. I like this video for acting/directing/editing.. but not the quality of the picture.. There is nothing there worth the extra hassle with raw.. It would be the same if you would film it with GH3 and you would have five times easier workflow..

maybe is just scene lit too low contrast or something...

Low contrast was completely intentional...I brought the high point of my curves down slightly and raised the blacks slightly w/ every shot. I wanted a washed out vintage look to give more of a retro feel.

Great video, simple but works. Like all of the people on screen, really brings the project to life. Now regarding the image I don't or should I say "See" the benefit of raw here. I think this could have been done on any current dslr.....

The strongest part was the project itself, I still don't see the extra latitude or resolution. If you would have said filmed on a Mark II I would have believed you, also great camera movement.

Thanks for the kind words.

Honestly though, something like the 5D2 (which I've shot extensively on) would 100% crash & burn @ 1000-1600 ISO in a fog filled room...no usable shots would have been captured. Red wouldn't have handled the environment so well either (although I obviously can't speak for Dragon). The foggy, heavily diffused look was intentional to give it an old-school vibe.

I want to feel confident that i could have shot that video in the same conditions with my GH3. Here's an ungraded frame grab from a video I'm working on shot in extreme contrast conditions, using only light source and a smoke filled room at iso 800 F/2.5

Could look less like a porno movie on the 5D3...this is without the washed out grade...not sure why dvxuser keeps shrinking my attachment...full size link is in my next post.

You couldn't have. The GH3 doesn't have the dynamic range, doesn't have the same good highlight rolloff, is only 8 bit so couldn't be pushed around in post if desired, doesn't have as good as resolution of the 5D RAW, has much worse aliasing and moire, and is not nearly as good in low light.

Yes you might have gotten close to the same pictures but the main benefit here is 14 bit raw. let's be let's be honest. Aren't you getting a BMCC anyway?

You make such words with no facts to backup any of your claims. As a shooter of multiple projects and many cameras I can honestly say you are quite lost.

One of the many reasons I walked away from Canon was resolution which GH provided. Dynamic range not so much as I always used lighting, so with that sense iso was not really that important.

Now this new hack has me interested and on paper appears to be better than any slr, but I just dont see it.

Bmcc while not as light sensitive to my eyes provides a higher detail more film like image resembling Alexa.

I shot many projects on 5D non raw and switched , Im still looking for footage to show me the reason to buy...
