Firmware update V1.2 (2009-17009)

Yet that's exactly what the Canon engineers said was happening in the 5D Mark II. They specifically recommended to use only UDMA cards because using slower non-UDMA cards, occasional artifacts would crop up.
I think they're really talking about different kind of artifacts. I can imagine that data dropouts could cause some strange artifacts similar to damaged transport stream packets received by a DVB receiver or something like that. The mud we're experiencing in the GH1 is hardly caused by data loss due to slow transfer rates (we're talking about 17mbps here). That's pure codec performance working at hardware limits either due to processing power and/or available memory. Remember that the Venus HD engine used in the GH1 is originally for image processing and not for video encoding. If it had a dedicated DSP for video encoding (e.g. like the HMC) it would be a different story.

Still I totally agree with your previous posts. You buy a product for what it is, not for what it might become in the future due to some software upgrade. That's foolish. It's like buying a flat panel and expecting the vendor to upgrade the number of total pixels by a software update or something like that => Not possible at all.

Yeah and we won't see a dedicated DSP for video encoding in a DSLR until DIGIC V comes along with the 1D Mark 4, according to the rumours.

So no firmware fix this time... maybe the GH2 will be an improvement.

what's wrong with third party batteries?
Voiding your warranty or killing the camera or both? If reputable battery manufacturers were making premium qualified batteries for the G range then I don't think so many people would be complaining. As it stands now you choose the premium price official ( but not great ) batteries or the slightly sketchy unqualified route.

I suggest a forum dedicated to talking about mud? Maybe in years to come it would be a great resource for budding filmmakers after the mud "look"

I don't know why third party battery may kill the camera. Obviously a dirty-cheap-no brand chinese battery would, but a battery from a real battery maker? why? what a battery has to do with a firmware update?

Anton Bauer Batteries are better than the original ones that replace.

A Third Party battery is a good deal, specially when one spends months trying to find a Panasonic battery.

thx!

Yeah I agree with the battery issue on the firmware. What does it mean a couple of years from now? Will they be harder to find or easier? I call bad move.

Hmmmm....my camera is still working just fine despite the lack of a codec improvement on the horizon? Did anyone's stop working? I'm still making pretty moving pic-i-tures with mine....

Me too. Despite my bitchin' about the FPN issue I'm still doing good despite the FPN issue (small joke.). I'm 7/8s through my feature and the only real complaint is still live video out. This issue alone is the only thing I've found holds me back from nailing things in my shot list. Hack this or get Illya to make a video tap and I'd be gold. I'm copacetic with the other needed work arounds. Recognizing the 'banding' and soft focuses require a monitor larger than the LCD. How many pre-orders are still needed Illya?

Hmmm...Panny released a firmware update for the LX-3...a 14 month old consumer camera....maybe we'll keep seeing firmware updates for awhile, regardless of what they have in them.
