this is what sony's website says :

- Support for new 32GB SxS PRO Card
- Support for PHU-60K Hard Drive Unit
- 24PSf signal output in camera mode
- Shutter speed options increased
- Usability enhancements to menus
- Minor bug fixes

-----

what options exactly - "Shutter speed options increased"?

what enhancements specifically - "Usability enhancements to menus"

where is the list of bugs fixed - "Minor bug fixes"

heard some other mixed comments about the audio being effected

im assuming the battery drain does not get fixed

, cant seem to get a straight answer out of sony, feel like they dont even know either, does anyone?

using chepaer cards is a nice benefit but i dont have 100% faith in that, ill stick with SxS cards even though i think the prices should be half by now, ouch!

im supposed to goto sony tomorrow but im starting to think, if its not broke dont fix it, any thoughts?

Right from the 1.1 upgrade manual.
It's Janglish.. But, you'll probably be able to understand it.

1) SxS 32GB, PHU-60K is supported.
2) The 24Psf signal output is supported in the Camera Mode.
3) Chinese menu is supported.
4) Clip Number Reset function is changed to the Clip Number Set so that arbitrary number can be
entered.
5) The Clip > Update function is added in the MENU so that the management data inside the
media can be restored manually.
6) Number of the shutter speed choices is increased. The newly increased choices are shown
60i/p 1/120
50i/p 1/120
30p 1/100
25P 1/120
24P 1/100, 1/120

7) It is improved that the REC mark can be displayed even during LCD Display OFF.
8) Audio distortion is decreased. (TRIM level is changed to the 6 dB step when operated from the
menu.)
9) It is improved that the picture does not swing during the REC Review mode.
[Bug Correction]
1) The trouble is corrected that an error occurs when switchover of the media slots takes place during continuous recording with the i.LINK connected.

Important to remember that the upgrade includes 2 new Printed circuit boards (PCB) , and a new camera backplate.

Right from the 1.1 upgrade manual.

I'm wondering how does increasing the granularity of the attenuator from 3dB / step to 6dB / step make things better, other than making it harder to nail the 'best' attenuator value?

Before I take the plunge this month on updating my FW, I need to find out what exactly is different about the audio system of the EX1 and whether I lose any functionality.

i always noticed the audio distortung a lot with loud (and low end) environments especially in auto. is there anyway to find out what they did to the audio change. i hate that they changed to 6db steps but if the audio distorts less thats something i would consider.

does it distort less in:

auto?
manual?

if auto, is it a change in the compressor? change in high pass filter?
i wish sony was clear about this. i ust brought my cam into teaneck, NJ sony to get updated and fix an LCD problem, i backed out of the update once i confirmed the 6db change (felt like it was taking an oiption away) but now that i hear about the audio distorting less, i may reconsider. has anyone noticed a differnce the audio quality after their update?

I phoned sony about the firmware upgrade today and they informed me this is now done through the original dealer..I phoned proav and it will cost me £80 plus vat...seems like its taking the .!**
really..after all it cost £5k, has anyone else had a similar experience.

The firmware upgrade does not involve replacing any parts, but there are other fixes that do and can be done at the same time but those are warranty and can be done without the firmware upgrade too.

In some countries Sony have always charged, some have been free, and some that were free now charge....

Many people who only want the firmware are now upgrading it themselves.

Guy
the firmware upgrade done by Sony in Canada and elsewhere (i assume) does involve part replacement and costs around $100.
Obviously the internet upgrade is free and is not the complete fix.

I spoke to sony just now and they will replace some internals as part of the upgrade (dependent on model number/batch).
Also they are picking up/delivering and doing upgrades etc for free!

All units below 1.05 firmware have the defective power supply boards that need to be replaced. If this has been done, the firmware upgrade needs no hardware changes. If not, send it to Sony for the update.

exactly, the firmware upgrade and the parts upgrade are two independant issues. The parts should be covered under warranty, the firmware should also be but in may cases isn't and it seems some people are being led to believe that their $100 is getting them more than just the firmware... The hardware is being repaired without firmware in some cases for free (ie people have just had the hardware upgraded without 1.11 install, in fact I believe the hardware started to be replaced under warranty before 1.11 was even released).

I had my battery drain down problem fixed last spring; the repair consisted of changing out a power control PCB and a firmware update. And yes, that was months before 1.11 became available.

I'm holding off on upgrading my firmware until I can confirm that no degradation of audio capabilities is part of the update and until I can get a new set of batteries for the master UPS that are not smashed in shipment like the last two sets. This is not a process to undertake without backup UPS power.

That thought did cross my mind, but laptops are fickle with those touch pads and I've had unintended 'mouse click' events when lifting my finger OFF the pad, so I don't trust them.
Our workstations are already equipped with XDCam drivers, so I'll wait until we get a working set of UPS batteries before I do this. Maybe by then someone will tell me exactly what the FW update does to the audio. I just hope that Sony didn't V1U-ize the audio with that update--I would be extremely angry if it did so.

"I've had unintended 'mouse click' events when lifting my finger OFF the pad,"

:-) I use a mouse, rarely use the TP even on a laptop unless I am run and gunning the laptop.

Personaly I havn't noticed anything negative about the audio with the update, but I'm not an audio specialist so my word isn't much guidance in that respect.
