Fireworks on Pine Lake

Hmm um I liked the composition of lots of the shots (reflection of fireworks in the windows) however I wasn't feeling the slow shutter, I would've preferred that it was shot at a normal shutter and then slowed down or something or kept at normal speed. It just felt like I was watching a laggy quicktime stream that kept breaking up, ya know?

But then again, I smoke crack so don't listen to me - i still think it was cool

I feel Montes sentiment on this; I was feeling the slow shutter. Too bad as you have, as always, some killer shots.

Hey, thanks for the comments, guys. BTW, I didn't use the slow shutter speed as an effect...I just wasn't getting anything worth while using a faster shutter...it was just too dark. :)

Didn't look any faster on a 30p timeline

good stuff. I took my dvx100a out yesterday and shot some fireworks myself. They weren't mortars like in your video, just ghey fountains. We can't buy those type of fireworks in NC, but.. in SC we can :) It gave me a chance to check out your other stuff again. I didn't realize you had all those videos on the site, I must... have miss them somehow.....

Yeah, I just shot some mortar stuff at my neighbor's house at 30p, 24 p and then all of the available shutter speeds for both rates... Question... What's the slow down percentage I will need to make the 30 p, 24 p?

Very nice shots. As an added effect, trying spinning and/or panning the camera when shooting the fireworks. It smears the colors in some very cool patterns.

Nice having a lake to shoot the fireworks over. We just launched ours on the street outside our friends house. Nothing like watching adults teach kids how to play with fire. The best was when my friend decided it was time to launch "the rocket". Well, the fog and wind had picked up and as soon as that thing lifted off it headed horizontal! Blew past our heads and almost took out his house! Only got a quick shot of the photo:

bummed I didn't have the dvx with me.

That looks like the red ivy from War of the Worlds!!

RUN HansK!!! RUN!!

disjecta - The Chinese Sky Candy looked great. The shutter didn't bother me, but then again I have a severe blinking problem. I blink every 1/4th of a second. j/k It looked great. But a few shots, (ex: a 3rd of the way in) had trees blocking the fireworks. How did those shots make it into the final piece? Did some of the hot firecrackers sleep with you? Is there a casting couch going on at Pine Lake? I'm shocked! The fireworks reflecting in the window was the best. The other stuff was too handheld and looked like news footage of an attack on Pine Lake or the effect Ridley Scott uses in battle sequences. :) Come on, you must get tired of everyone telling you how beautiful your shots are. Ok, I'll admit, it looked like "beautiful" news footage. hehehehe

Hey Disjecta,

Good idea with the shutter speed D. As always, artistic and beautiful. Are you interested in joining our Seattle Team for the filmerica challenge? It would be nice to have another set of eyes with your experience with the DVX. I just posted a new thread with some fireworks grabs. I should have just added them to your thread....oh well

Disjecta,

I've heard it said that the best results to get slow motion effect is to shoot in 60i then slow it down. However, is it still possible to get a great slow motion effect when you have shots in 24P?

Pete

Also...I hear a lot about shutter speed setting, how does one adjust the shutter speeds in the DVX.

Thanks guys
Pete

there's 2 buttons on the side of the dvx where you pull out the viewscreen. Shutter & speed

here you can adjust your shutter speed

forgot to comment, liking this as usual disjectas. you always got a good eye for composition and what's going on around you
