Firewire to USB input SOLUTION : )

I have a Asus laptop with USB 2.0 ports (and no ExpressCard slot). I need to be able to digitize into the laptop from the 4-pin Firewire out on my DVX.

Are there any solutions (that people have actually successfully utilized) that work? I know cable adaptors do NOT work, as USB & Firewire are different protocols and do not directly communicate) but has anyone found a workaround or solution to this problem? I know there are expresscards that have Firewire inputs, but I only have a SD/SM card reader.

I know Belkin makes a Firewire-to-USB adaptor for use with Mac Mini's, but I don't know if it works with PC's. I do not own an Apple product for use as an intermdiary and don't want the file restrictions for a FAT32 drive, anyway.

Please feel free to email directly or respond - I need help!

Thanks,

Curtis

I'm sorry to say that I don't think there is a solution to this. Basically firewire is now obsolete in terms of compatibility with modern laptops.

The only workaround I can think of is to get an old PC with firewire and use it as a capture device, and then transfer your media files to your laptop. That is, of course, a bit crazy.

Or, perhaps some kind of Solid State Recorder for your DVX might work (I'm no expert there though).

If I'm wrong about this and someone does have a solution, I'd be very glad to hear it!

I do my capturing on a heavy (i7) pc and a fast external harddisk, and have a lightweight but powerfull laptop for mobility (editting). The external harddrive gets plugged in the computer I am using at that moment... Sometimes this bothers me a bit, but most of the time it's just my workflow.

I guess you're going to solve this somewhat like me.

Firewire to USB input SOLUTION : )

Problem: PC laptop with only USB inputs, but only have Firewire outputs from camera/audio device/mixer for digitizing, recording, etc:

Used with:

You will want to make sure the Firewire ExpressCard has the TI chipset if you are using Presonus or M-Audio audio recording/mixing devices. I bought the whole set up for under $50 on Amazon.

This looks very interesting. I would be interested in running my DVX directly to my laptop for recording video, but I didn't think this would work since Firewire has a substantially higher throughput than USB. Is this how you are using it?

Curtis: Does that work?!? I'm in the same boat, I gave up Firewire with my old laptop, and I'm in a digitizing pickle.

...but I didn't think this would work since Firewire has a substantially higher throughput than USB...

The devices in question are USB 2.0 (480 mbps) and Firewire 400 (400mbps). Theoretically it should work - real world is another matter.
