Firewire S-Video Compressed

I have been capturing over the last few years with a digisuite Le system. It is MJPEG file format and captures at about 10-12 megabytes per second. DV is captured at 3.3? or so and is very compressed. It even looks compressed especially the reds. My question is what type of signal comes out of the S-output on the DVX100a? Is it the same signal as dv but not compressed or is it a better signal. When I capture at 10 mb per second there are no blocking in my frame grabs. My problem is I dont think it will capture 24p. I have been using Vegas (firewire)and love it except for the choppy red blocks. Is there a way to capture 24p into my digisuite (Speed razor 5.51Belly-up and Premier 6.5YUK)and if not will 30 p look as good. :-/

Re: Firewire S-Video Compressed

Opps. forgot to say I capture with the S-video on the Digisuite.

Re: Firewire S-Video Compressed

well the S-video signal will be ok. just capture it like you do any other material (i always did like 7MB/sec).
i am not sure about the 24p.- i think SpeedRazor cannot (in-sync´s Blade can though and captures firewire). i also think the Digisuite cannot handle 24p, so you are in trouble there AFAIK. but maybe i am wrong (it is a lot easier in PAL-land ;) )
30p and 24p are definitely different, but it will depend on what you are producing for.
start looking for a new editor! speedrazor is gone (in-sync is bankrupt and me and many others had to change recently already) and Premiere 6.5 is outdated.
there are many cool affordable NLEs out: Liquid Edition, Vegas, Premiere Pro etc. when recording firewire you don´t need the Digisuite anymore and if you need the analogue component signal go for the Liquid Edition (as i did) which does 24p and comes with a cool breakoutbox for analogue component. (beware though: it cannot capture 24p in its current state version 6. but i heard it will in 6.1 which comes out any day now as a free upgrade! it can edit in 24p though and at the moment you only nmeed to capture with another app and then import to LE6)

Re: Firewire S-Video Compressed

is it possible to capture analogue (s-video) in 24p?
If so what format? Kinda like the digisuite. So the capture is not blocky like when capturing 1394.

Wadro,

If you are shooting with a Camera that is MiniDV then the camera is applying compression as it records the frame to the tape. Therefore capturing at 10-12MB/sec is a huge waste of space.

The red-blocks, or jaggie edges on reds(and many other prominent colours) is due to the colour of the DV25 Codec, which is sampled at a quarter the resolution of the lumanince channel(B&W).

I am assuming that by capturing via S-Video and that capture card, that it was performing some sort of chroma-blur effect to the footage to make it appear less blocky.

The Signal coming out of your DVX100a from the S-Video port is an analog signal vs. the completely digital signal of the firewire port.

In my opinion, capturing via firewire yields the best results, your are not losing any quality from your footage when you capture it digitally. (aside from the fact that your capturing a compressed image already).

to get rid of the blocky reds in Vegas, you can apply a chroma blur filter.. I am not a vegas user, but I know it is there.

People seem to think that capturing at a higher Data rate means better quality, it doesn't. Capturing at a DVCPRO50 rate of 7.7MB/sec from a DV25 stream just means your wasting space.

Firewire all the way dude.

Re: Firewire S-Video Compressed

If the footage is already on tape, then capturing through S-video will only result in a lower-quality capture.

If you're trying to capture live footage, without recording to tape, then I guess the possibility exists that the s-video port could be bypassing the 4:1:1 chroma decimation step. That may be worth testing. But if you're capturing from DV tape, playing back through the camera, you'll get a much better, more accurate image by capturing through the firewire than you ever would through s-video.

I believe this is the answer I was looking for. I will do some tests tomorrow and see if it works. If it does, it should be a lot better quality than firewire. I was thinking of doing a shoot with the new Liquid edition pro BOB hooked to my laptop and capture uncompressed. ??? Thanks for all the help

Hey Alpi,
Glad to know others are out there... Blade fans...
I'm still using it... although not feeling very secure... we've regrouped as a Yahoo Group under Speedrazor. and there is a Key Code generator available to reboot the software if your computer dies. :-X
I am looking at other options now (including Liquid) but I really liked the way Blade worked..  the interface... the compression to DVD and the idea that there wasn't any additional hardware required.

I went through this with the FAST video machine a couple of years ago... Didn't Pinnacle buy them??

How do you like the liquid?  I spoke to Jerry Hergenrader (former VP at In-sank) and he is using liquid but says it isn't the same as Blade/ Speedrazor ... more Avid-like)...
This SUCKS so bad!!! :'(
