Firewire Out of Computer Into HPX as Recorder?

I don't want to, a friend does- he can't get a file out of his nle or something.

I said I doubt it's possible, right?

Just put the mode switch in PC MCR, and turn off the thumbnails. Your camera should then see any incoming firewire stream and display it on its LCD, or out to its component video outputs so you can watch it on a monitor. You should be able to record it by pressing the VCR record buttons -- I don't remember the exact buttons, and it's been a while since I've used an HPX170 so you'll have to check, but it should be pretty obvious once you have it in MCR with the thumbnails off...

We're still trying to get this to work, looking at the manual and Barry's book.

MCR mode, thumbnails off.
PC mode- 1394 Device

Get no image on the LCD, and the record buttons (Zebra/OIS) don't do anything.

Does the computer's outgoing signal have to match the HPX's setting? I know MCR won't input 720p/720pn/30pn.

The computer's outputting 1080 24p from FW800 to FW400 in the HPX. Is that a problem?

In MCR mode, the closest choice is 1080i/60i. Is that the problem?

Any suggestions, Barry?

If your using Premiere, I'm not sure it will allow you to output back to camera via firewire. I remember trying several years back, and was amazed premiere didn't support firewire export. Not sure about finalcut though.

yeah, that's a question for Mac experts, i don't know whether that will work or not. I know it works on Windows, from any firewire-enabled editor or through "printing to tape". Does the Mac version have some sort of "print to tape" function?

I'll check, but wouldn't it be a moot point (at least in this case) since the video in the computer is 1080 24p and in MCR the camera only records 1080 60i?

Firewire doesn't transport 1080/24, it can only transport 1080/60i with 24p embedded with pulldown. And the MCR can't record 1080/24, it only records 1080/60i with 24p embedded. So, in short, if the computer can output it, it will have to output it in a way that the camera will be happy to record anyway.
