Firewire not working, please help

Hey,

I searched "firewire" and didnt find what I was looking for so maybe you all can help me. I'm very discouraged at the moment, because right after using my camera for a friends movie, all of a sudden my computer no longer recognizes the camera when its plugged in with firewire. The computer recognizes my other camera but not my dvx, and I even tried buying a new firewire cable and it didnt help. Is there some sort of setting on the dvx that turns off the firewire(I looked and found only one that converts analogg to digital) or something I can do to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IF worst comes to worst I could maybe use my other camera for import although I can never get the 24p to work on the comp when I use that cam. Have any suggestions about that, and would there be any quality loss using a different camera?

Thanks for the help, hopefully its an easy fix :undecided

Sounds like the firewire port on the camera got burned out. :(

Anyway, capturing with another camera will work just fine. I never use the DVX to capture with.

so nothin I can do? And how could this happen?

This isnt what I wanted to hear haha....and also when using another cam, what can I do to make the comp decode the 24p correctly

Only thing to do is send it in for repair...if you are sure it's the camera and not the cable or computer.

The computer won't care which camera is used for capture. It's just looking at digital.

I would suggest try connecting your camera to another computer ... and lets see if it recognises your cam. I remember in a similar situation with one of my friends (though he did not have a DVX), this worked.

Best of luck

I'm hoping the firewire port on my camera didn't burn out. Last night I had to use it not to digitize tape but to bridge to my television to use as a monitor while editing.

It worked fine for awhile, then I took a break for dinner. When I got back I wasn't getting video nor audio through the TV, but was getting audio through the computer (which never happens).

Did I burn out the firewire cable? If I did that, wouldn't final cut alert me that my camera was no longer connected? It still allows me to open the project in final cut and everything...I just can't see it on the TV monitor anymore.

ANY advice/help would be appreciated. I'm stumped.

Thanks,
Adam

It's very unlikely that a firewire cable would go bad. It's most likely the firewire card on your camera.......that seems to be a common problem with the DVX. Don't worry about it, just use another camcorder for capture and save your heads for recording.

If you shoot in 24p, then you must capture with a camera capable of 24p to get the footage into the computer?

No.....it's on the tape and any camcorder with timecode capabilities will work as a deck for capture into computer

Given how much I read here on the subject of these firewire ports burned out, it seems that the major gripes are that:

A technology known to be 'hot pluggable' isn't when the DVX is concerned,
AND
There was no mention of this in the manual,
AND
The fix is not covered under warranty - as it's deemed a negligent use.

How does this not leave us in an actionable position, legally? Seems like a bum deal. With the amount of money I shelled out for this thing, I would have hoped it would perform at a level ABOVE most other cameras in the arena of functionality and reliability.

I still love the camera, but come on. If the manual doesn't cover it, am I supposed to consult a message board before doing remedial tasks such as plugging in a firewire cable to my powerbook?
