Firewire length question.

Has anyone done any shooting using firewire to a laptop? I've heard conflicting accounts as to length, some saying that no more than 15 feet should be used, others saying that up to 30 feet is good. I have three 30 foot lengths on order and now I wonder if that is workable or not.

Lenghts up to 20 feet should be safe in any situation. Longer cables can often be used successfully but are more prone to interferences depending on the environment you're shooting and the equipment used. Personally I've been to use a single 40 feet cable and didn'te experience any problem. If you need to go further o need guaranteed signal quality, go for one or more repeater. Datavideo offer cheap inline repeaters (http://www.datavideo.us/products/vp_314_main_page.htm) . Less than $50 on eBay. Gefen offer Firewire extenders over fiber links (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=2808) that can bridge equipment up to 1640 feet. They're definitely not cheap, though.
