Firewire isn't working?

I am running XP professional 64 bit with vegas 7. I have a firewire port direct to the motherboard, one in the case, and then I also just installed one through pci. In device manager, the IEEE 1934 hardware shows up, but when I connect my dvx nothing happens. I have turned it off, switched to vcr, and plugged it in several different ways but in any of my ports nothing happens. Does anyone have an idea of whats wrong? Why isn't it showing up? And yes, I do have dv out enabled from the camera.

Thanks,
Pfista

Try it on another machine if you can to confirm - possibly burnt out fire wire port on your cam?

That seems really unlikely, but i'll try it. I mean it was working before pefectly, it's probably just because the computer I have now is x64 and for some reason the firewire isn't working. But it says it's installed properly so that's why I don't get it...

Most likely the camera port went poof. DVX is notoriously bad when it comes to 1394 reliability. Other cameras too, but DVX is the most sensitive damn thing I've ever seen. The only way to make a safe connection is with both PC and camera turned off.

Firewire ports fry all the time. Try using a different cam to see which end they went on. If you're lucky, it will be the PC side.

Alright guys you are right, it looks like I fried the DV port on my dvx. I just plugged in an old sony and it installed instantly. Agh. So, what do you recommend I do? Should I get it repaired, or capture from the sony?

I don't know if the Sony will support all the various formats the DVX can shoot. I'm also unfamilliar with the quality of Panasonics support, but that would likely be the way to go, specially if it's still under waranty.

One more test, if you want- hook the DVX to the Sony via FW, and set one to VCR. If the port is working, you'll see what the other cam is recording or playing. This means you have a driver issue... oh joy! Good news!

I only have a firewire to DV cable, how do I hook them together?

I was thinking about buying a new mini dv for capture, like most people do here. That way I won't be running my heads as much. If I got a new camera would it be OK if I capture from the new one and then re use the tape in the dvx? If the only tapes I use are those master mq or whatever?

You take your standard firewire cable, where one end fits the DVX, the other end fits the Sony. It will likely be a 6 pin to 4 pin?
