Firewire Hot Swapping STICKY request

Ok,
murphy´s law applied again and not only are my MBPs FW ports fried, no, my HVX also had its FW400 port for the longest time.
I´ve been streaming to disk ever since we got our first HVX over 2 years ago, with no problems.
My worklflow usually was: start FCP, connect FW 6pin to MBP, connect FW 4pin to HVX, turn on HVX, logg and capture - go!

I read post here about fried ports before, about various ways to connect FW devices, but since everything worked for me, I didn´t bother much.
Now, I googled for answers on what I did wrong and all the sites talking about Firewire/iEEE1394 claim, that Firewire was hot swappable.

So what´s the truth on this?
Is this sth that will just happen after some time? Or can this generally be avoided?
Can we hot swapp cameras on computers?

As tiny as the FW port on our cameras is, as big gets the bill for a repair of the same.
If there already is a sticky on this, feel free to redirect me, otherwise I think this issue truly diserves a dedicated sticky.

Regards,

Spartacus

PS those of you, who have suffered the same fate, how much was the repair of the HVX´s FW port?
