Firewire connection cannot be established

When I connect the HVX with my Notebook with a 4-4 pin Firewire cable, then nothing happens. Do I need a powered cable? On the Desktop with a 4-6 pin cable it works. But I mean, the camera has power, the notebook has power, why does it not work? If I need a powered Firewire port, how can I get one with those modern notebooks?

PP - what sort of computer are your running? If it's a Mac, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility - you'll see the camera appear as a greyed out drive on the left. Select it and click 'Mount'

If you're running a PC.... then I'm afraid I cannae ride to your rescue.

Also, your 4-4 pin cable might be the problem. Maybe test it on another piece of hardware?

It's a new Dell Core Duo. I also had the idea of a broken cable, but I cannot test it with another device, as I have none. Maybe I'll pay the PC shop a visit. But technically it should be no problem, right? So it will be the cable. I also don't think that there's more energy needed. By the way. I bought a 2.5" 120 GB external drive, and it has 2 USB plugs on one side. On the desktop, it is only recognizes with all two plugged in, but on the notebook, one will do it...

I think the manual says that for windows USB is prefered and for Mac its firewire. This is for data transfer and pulling the files from the P2 cards, yeah?
Make sure the camera is in USB device mode.

For live capture it needs to be connected by firewire, but in windows this is only going to work within Avid or Edius, although it will show up as a 576i DV device outside of those.

4-4 definitely works for streaming. Don't try to do file transfer through the firewire to your dell, but if you're doing streaming capture, 4-4 will work. If it's not seeing the camera, I'd suggest trying a different cable (or a different firewire port!)

I don't have another firewire port, but you say that Windows will not show the connection? Have you checked it yourself? Because it does show up on the desktop. But I will check the cable.

I now did connect the desktop with the notebook with a 4-6 pin cable (the desktop only has 6 pin Firewire ports), and it did work, it shows a firewire connection, so the port on the notebook should work. By the way, as I have this convenient connection, how do I transfer data between the notebook and desktop?

It SOMETIMES works. But not always. It's frustrating and annoying to try to use 1394 DEVICE mode with Windows. It's not guaranteed to work in the manual, and you're just asking for frustration if you try it. It will work sometimes, and then it won't.

And frankly, it's not supposed to. The USB 2.0 port is there for working with Windows.

The firewire port only works with windows for live streaming. It's not guaranteed to work for data transfer in 1394 Device mode.

Hmm, thats all pretty much what I said above innit? Why does it always have to come from Sir Barry? :)

I only use it for streaming, so it should work? But I should still get a message from Windows. But why shouldn't it work with Firewire? Otherwise Firewire ports would be useless.

But how do we use Vegas to load firewire from the HVX for things shot to tape? I cannot get the camera to mount in vegas at all, and I need to capture a tape I shot in 480i today....

help...

Why is USB even still around... Firewire has a much faster data transfer rate.... I think PC manufacturers should drop USB and put in all Firewire connectors.

make sure you have xp service pack 2.
that will prob solve the camera issue with the pc.

no, it does not. I have tried everythink....had microsoft and panasonic tech support.....each blames the other, and I cannot connect 1394 in the meantime......this really blows....now I am without a way to load the tape I have shot.
