Firewire Conflict when Capturing With Camcorder

Hi folks.
I've finally gotten a cheap camcorder (Canon ZR800) to use for capturing instead of my DVX and I notice that it won't work while my external drive that i'm using as my scratch drive is hooked up to Firewire800. I've got the camcorder hooked up via Firewire400. This worked fine when I captured with my DVX. But now I have to switch the drive over to USB2 in order for the Canon to be recognized by Final Cut, and then when I'm done capturing I switch the drive back to Firewire 800. Any thoughts on this?
It shouldn't be a problem doing it this way, right? But kind of inconvenient.
Thanks for any clarification of the situation.

Which Mac is an important factor.

Two things:

1. Canon's don't play well with FW. My recollection is that the company has a non standard implementation of FW. Use Firewire basic.

2. Either capture to a dedicated internal HDD, or create a second FW bus, and attach HDD to it, and cam to the Mac's FW bus.
