Firewire 800/400 question

The firewire cable I have is a 9 pin to 4-pin cable.
What's the difference between that and a 6-pin to 4-pin cable?

If there is a difference what is it.

Guess what Im asking is do I need a different cable to hook to the dvx and my macbbook
pro '15?

It's the one Apple gave me. Just need to make sure before I test the video downloading, which I will do for the first time hopefully tonight, once I get the answer I need thanks.

9-pin = FW800. 6-pin = powered FW400. 4-pin = unpowered FW400.

So a 9-pin to 4-pin would be the appropriate cable if your computer had a FW800 port (I don't know what kind of ports an MBP has offhand).

my '15 Mac Book pro has a 800 firewire port.

So all I need to do is hook the firewire 9 pin to computer first, with computer shutdown?
than the 4 pin to the DVX, with camera shutdown.

Than turn on both? What particular order if any do I need to turn on first?

Thanks

i was very surprised to learn the unibody macbook pro's did not have a 6 pin firewire port on them. only 9 pin. so, that's just one more cable to buy! fwiw, i picked up several 9-pin to 4-pin fw cables at cablesforless.com, very cheap, fast shipping, can't beat it ,really,. they're not real easy to find, imho.
