Firestore Workflow?

Hey all,

In pre-pro for a feature length doc where we're planning to shoot about 30 horurs of interviews. I'm thinkning about purchasing a FS-100 to have the extended recording time.

What are people doing on shoots when they've filled up their FS-100? How long does it take to transfer the footage off the FS-100 to another drive?

Also, what are people using for backups? I was thinking of buying a Blu Ray drive and burning off 50 GB back ups. The drive is $700 and the 50GB blanks ar $40 so it's not super cheap.

Any thoughts?

toshihoo,

For backups you may want to go with two or more hard drives. They are so inexpensive these days it just makes financial sense. By backing up to two or more drives gives you plenty of redundancy and security.

As far as transfering files... i off load to G-Tech 500 gig SATA drives via my MacBook Pro. It takes less than real time. I'd say maybe 30 minutes to 40 minutes to offload a full S-100. But, I'm guessing there because I typically leave the Firestore while it down loads and continue to shoot on my three 8 gig P2 cards. So, I don't really watch the transfer process that closely. I just know it's done by the time I return.

I hope this helps.

Hard drives are much cheaper than blue ray disks now, so I'd use that for backup. Blue ray is still new, so it's probably better to wait 6-12 months for prices to come down.
