Firestore Didn't Like The FW Daisy-Chain

First time transferring from FS100 to FCP 5.1.2 today.

After a couple of minutes of learning the new Import Panasonic 2 window, I brought the FS100 online, aimed FCP to the proper directory and with clips in queue began the transfer process.

Unfortunately FCP would only import 2-4 seconds of any clip then stop as if it had completed transferring clips in their entirety.

After trouble-shooting a variety of scenarios, the one causing the problem was that I had daisy-chained the Firestore into the back of the external firewire case I was capturing to.

Connected the Firestore directly to the back of the Quad Mac and transfers completed perfectly. In case anyone has the same capture problems, it might be the FW daisy-chain.

John:

To add to your discovery, in most cases, it is wise to invest $60 in a FireWire card. It's much better at working with that bandwidth. The internal bus gets maxed out quickly. Even on my home system, when I added a second FW drive, I could not use my little home digital camcorder unless I unplugged everything.

that's odd, because my HVX is connected to a FW400, which is connected to a FW800 triple interface, which is then connected to the computer (with a FW800 connection)
no trouble yet... *crosses fingers*

Troypod,

I'm thinking maybe there would be less probs daisy-chaining the HVX via FW versus daisy-chaining the Firestore via FW?

It's always a BAD idea to daisy chain your FireWire video equipment, as it eats up a ton of bandwidth.
