fired today

Did said friend do this off work premises? He was at work when he emailed/spoke with nipple ring did he? If so, then the manager over stepped her bounds on dismissal. This is not sexual, racial, religious harassment.
Finally, do you have a company hand-book? Check out termination procedures. Unless your buddy was written up on at least one other occasion, termination for just about ANY offense--exception is drug/alcohol use, certain sexual harassments--on the first occasion is EXTREMELY rare.
Have your bud check with an employment lawyer liscensed to practice in your state...a nice fat settlement might assuage his hurt and devastated feelings!

Focus This - you sound like you work for the company I used to work for. It was almost impossible to get fired from this place. The disiplanary section of the employee handbook was 75 pages!
1 - verbal warning (of course this verbal warning is WRITTEN down in your personel file!)
2 - written warning - (placed in the file next to the above "verbal" warning)
3 - 3 day suspension
4 - 5 day suspension with counceling
5 - termination.

It was rediculious - Not one strike, not two, not three, not even four! You didn't get fired until the fifth instance.
And on top of that, they had to be on the same subject. So you could get a couple warnings on one matter and even more on something else.
Big corporations have gotten totally out of control with all the legal issues.

Well, the problem appears to be getting sued by an employee for unjust termination. It's gotten so bad that apparently a lot of companies won't even fire you at all anymore. They just keep piling on work and unpleasant assignments in the hopes that you'll get fed up and quit...

Lesson learned, don't get too comfortable at work. Keep the casual language and bad jokes for your own time.

i.e. for DVXuser.com

Yeah, I think it's illegal (it at least places the company in an actionable position) to fire someone without any sort of warning or chance to amend their behavior unless gross misconduct is involved, which this just sound like bad judgment.

Silver lining? Without a warning your friend will have a better argument for unemployment (unless there is a documented trail of warnings). I'm from Texas, born and raised until after college, but never really worked there or dealt with unemployment so most of my comments are based on Washington (the state) which is a pretty liberal environment. They have great unemployment that the employers pay for, which means they fight it more, but it's still a great system. After grad school at UW, 98-01, I was in this miserable rut selling women's 3x plum fleece sets for Nordstrom.com over the phone. I couldn't afford to move and I was basically dead. Ding Ding "Welcome to Nordstrom, how may I help you..." for eight hours a day. Finally told a customer to ****off on tape and I was outta there. Fast forward, got let go from a long term temp job because a client of the place where I was working complained about me, but they never gave me a chance or even talked to me about what happened. I think the temp agency knew this was shaky so they continued to work with me. Because of this, I was not "fired" just experiencing a reduction in hours. I basically was on unemployment for the next year and milked it until it ran out. I moved into a cheaper place, and began writing. A year later and I was out of Seattle, having wound up in New Orleans, had written a full length play that won the Southern New Plays festival, directed theatre in New York as recently as last October, worked as a dramatic content writer for a software company, and have a budding part time career as a commercial actor. Now, because New Orleans is one of the last true bohemias in the US, I make "a living" working 6-12 hours a week teaching acting privately and acting and sound design on the collegiate level and the rest of the time I am free for creative endeavors.

Thank god I got fired.

It did suck for a while. I moved into what I called the Boo Radley Halfway House in Seattle, which was filled with 50 year old men, 2 of whom were missing limbs, and several of whom smelled like a brewery by 3 in the afternoon each day.

But because I was on unemployment I was able to pursue creative endeavors that led to employment in my actual field.

So make sure your friend looks into unemployment. If he can work it right, it could lead to great opportunities. The song he needs to sing is "lack of warning - no opportunity to amend - first offence." Make sure he follows up on it (I think there may be a time limit after termination), and offer to buy the first round until he's back on his feet again.

Sorry this sound so much like an on air letter to Casey Casum(sp?).
Hopefully helpful.

Tell you Friend to find a lawyer and sue the company.

First of all, your friend didn't violate any work ethics at work, because the joke was made outside of work hours and not in the work place. Also your friend didn't offend the guy, he spoke to his EX.

Whatever EX told this guy, is her interpretation of the joke. Whatever this guy told the manager, is HIS interpretation of his Ex interpretation of the joke.

So it's all hearsay. However, you should find out exact cause why your friend got fired. If he got fired because of that joke, I think there is a good chance that your friend will get a good compensation. But if his got fired because the manager didn't like him, then it's just a conflict of personalities, and lawyers can do nothing about it.

Also remember, there is a free speech right, so if the manager is trying to impose his/her moral views as a basis of establishing employment, then he/she and the company should be fried in court.
