Fireball at 1080 ?

I'm about to start a project that involves shooting a lot of people in natural light, daylight, sort of run and gun -ish. So I figure 720pn is good for this (saves me space and looks filmy). and Cinelike_V

Another part of this project involves filming a big fireball at night. I'm very interested in capturing as much detail here as possible (especially in the highlights) and picking up ambient light that this fireball sheds on other objects - and keeping noise down (as there will also be a lot of unlit dark areas) So maybe I'll want to switch formats here to 1080? over 60i ? What do you recommend? and Cinelike_D

I also dream of having this entire movie screened at festivals on big screens - so I read somewhere that maybe my 720pn choice might not be the best choice for digital projection as it is a 60i device? Worst case scenario I'll need to convert the 24pn footage to 60i footage in FCP if this is the case?

oh... just got a HPX170 for this.

thanks.

I wouldnt shoot 60i unless you want that look (its very popular in Japan) or you shooting specifically for brodcast.

1080 is going to give you the best quality, however, I have seen plenty of HVX 720p footage screened on digital projectors and it can look very very good.

I absolutely love CinelikeD but for the fireball at night scene you might be better served by HDNormal or Bpress. CinelikeD will give you a bit more lattitude, but it gives you no overexposure protection (knee) and it is the noiseiest out of all the HVX gammas. I'd probably go with BPress.

That answer is too easy and sounds like too much fun. Are you coming down here to help me design and ignite the fireball? The party store is only a hundred yards or so from my house. So there will be easy and immediate access to beer if needed.

Wait..

"CinelikeD will give you a bit more lattitude, but it gives you no overexposure protection (knee)"

I thought that D has an auto built in knee. And V has it also. please explain.

If you lived a little closer I'd be over in a flash ... sounds like fun alright!

Cinelike D if memory serves me right has no knee protection. And its true that it will also be a noisier choice in the gray areas of your shots.

So D No knee. All the others have knees of some sort. So watch my 100 Zebras, as Barry says, if I'm in D.

A little rhyme just in time ...

"When in D watch your knee!"

or

When in D watch your Z!"

That last one may not work for some people. It depends on how you say the letter Z. Some pronounce it "Zed" and some prononce it "Zee".

Close down! All the way down.

Close down! All the way down.

During the day it seems the answer is:

1) Apply all the ND you have (1/64 on the HPX170)
2) f 11

There is still some 100 zebras at the very center of the flame. But mostly the thing has detail. This is a high pressure gas flame. So it may be "hotter" than say a campfire.

Seems that it would be the same at night. Still curious to see how much ambient light it will be able to capture with this aperture.
