Good luck to everyone in or near the fire's path. My heart really goes out to those folks in Lake Arrowhead. 160 homes lost so far. I am in Thousand Oaks so all I am dealing with is the ash and smoke. Sunday at 3 p.m. it was so dark that some of the street lights came on and I had to turn on lights in my house.
I am really hoping that they can stop the fire at Los Flores Canyon and not let it get into Topanga Canyon.
What I don't get is why these morons that are setting some of these fires do it.

Kudos and huzzahs to all the firemen, police, sheriffs deputies and of course the pilots of those choppers and fixed wing aircraft.
Watching the DC 10 do a drop yesterday was awesome. They said that the way the DC 10 has to fly to do this that 90% of the flight is in the danger zone of take off's and landings.
I hope all of you folks out there survive this intact.
My best to you.

...I'm really hoping they find out who started the fires in orange county, and let all the homeowners and firefighters stone them. ahh. So stupid...

On a side note...i think the air is pretty nasty right now...my snot is nasty brown!

THey evacuated my brother from a conference in Lake Arrowhead yesterday. I was kinda freaking when he didn't answer his phone, but his wife just e-mailed me.

We have a constant threat of this here in Colorado, especially with the current pine beetle infestation. The natives usually do a good job of clearing their land with a fire break, but I have met many transplants from SoCal that let the trees grow right up next to their houses...cause it looks pretty.

You nailed it Jim

Many, many homes in San Diego are sorrounded by dry shrubbery and tree. This happended a mere 4 years ago, and here we are again.

I just woke up to a shocker

Voluntary evacuations for east of I-805
Posted @ 7:34 AM

The following advisory for voluntary evacuations has been ordered:

All areas east of Interstate 805.

this 805 freeway pretty much devides the center of san diego in half. it is the gateway to the major urban areas.

Yeah, we had our stuff cleared, hence the reason the fire stopped on it's own, a mere 20 feet from the house.

Kovarova, what time do you fly out today? Also, please keep one of us on "user" updated via-text or something so we can know you're ok.

damn i dont get in till 10pm. it is killing me. im speaking with family on the phone and the fear level in their voices has raised dramatically. i have a freaking 4 hour layover in seattle. the lobby of my modern condo building in downtown has been converted into a shelter. it is getting much much worse.

Here are the latest figures about the Witch Creek fire, according to CalFire:
* 164,000 acres. One percent contained.
* Seven firefighters and one civilian have been injured. Two additonal injuries were reported this morning - it is unknown as yet if they were firefighters or civilians.
*500 homes destroyed. 250 damaged.
*100 commercial properties destroyed, 75 damaged.
* 50 outbuildings destroyed, 50 damaged.

this fire is pounding north county and only 1% contained.

This is crazy. I remember my first encounter with the SoCal fires when I first moved to Thousand Oaks in '93. I was walking to the mailbox to get the mail and my landlords kid from upstairs was this 12 year old girl and she was frantically trying to get a small tv on the back of their truck. Meanwhile, I was downstairs, enjoying a day off watching movies. I had no clue the fire was about a half mile a way. So, I know how scary it can be.

Stay safe. Shoot, all the way up here in Santa Maria I can smell the smoky air. Scary.

And I don't mean to sound callous to those that lost everything. Sometimes a firebreak isn't enough. And I'm not saying that it would prevented any of this. I just have a hard time understanding why people don't learn.

Glad your place is ok Brando.
Good luck Kovarova

I still can't understand those people that won't leave when told too.

Hope everyone is safe. We're all thinking about you.

My Prayers are with you

My Prayers are with you

I used to live in San Diego - first in Del Mar, then in Encinitas.

Looking at the evacuation maps - its astounding.

My prayers are with all of you in SoCal.

One of my professors said that she thinks that my school could be shut down by the end of the week. I would imagine that evacuation would happen relatively soon after that.

If the fire does make it into the valley, that's going to be a lot of homes...
