finishing HVX + M2 Adapter feature (Thoughts)

amazing looking... of course, mainly due to Vincent's DP skills.

I haven't considered the M2 in the past because of the lack of footage approaching this quality.

Vincent, have you tried any of the other 35mm adapters? any thoughts?

I've played with the Mini-35 Adapter from P+S technic and didn't like loseing over a stop and 2/3 just for the adapter (thats my guess I didn't shoot a spot meter though it) and I didn't like the construction of it the handel on top didn't feel very secure with a big zoom on it... just pushing menu buttons seemsed to shake the platform...I've seen the pro35 and that seems very well Built...but for $17,000 the mini35 didn't seem worth it.

I had herd about the red rock guys back when they where just Publishing the Do it yourself guide... I like to buiild my own stuff (Dolly, metal Halide, High output Florecents) but I never had time to try the DIY way.

so I ordered right before the big 24 articule came out. I decided to get the Redrock when on there fourm I saw the picture of there Fabrication plant.. This just ment to me they where no longer just 2 guys in an aprtment. So I figured for the Price liike $1500 it was so cheap if it didn't work may be it would be just a cool look for music videos. I has far exceled past my Expectations.

Mr. Pascoe, when you get some time it would be interesting to get a report on:
- Camera settings: Scene file, exposure on SLR lens and camera.
- Exposure: Did you rate the camera/use lightmeter (Incident, spot?)
- Monitoring: Monitor/waveform?

I feel it's taking a bit longer for me get familiar with Hvx with regards to exposure, currently I'm beginning to try to use the upper part
of the exposure curve whenever possible eg. saturate the "print" as much as possible.

I recognize your experince with the mini-35:
I shot 30 days last year with the Pro35 with great success. 14 days ago I tried the mini35 with my hvx. I was pretty shocked of how flimsy the cameraplatform was, I actually ruined a few shots on the long lenses when just operating the iris.
I did like the shoulderpad/handles system though....

Monitoring

Monitoring

Well in the beging I wanted to Rent the $3200 17inch panasonic Monitor... but that wasn't in the budget... so production got me a $600 21' Gateway monitor that had Component in ...it was horrible for exposure and Color ..but was great for Foucusin fact it some times ran on the dolly with me and the 1st AC. unfourtunaty twice during production the Gateway died on us and had to be replaced..

Second we had a sony 9' SD feild monitor... which was great for Exposure and Lattitude because I could calibrate the bars...(I am suspect of the Composite out of the HVX seems "dirrty") but everything looked in Foucus... Grrr

my Key grip halfway through the shoot got a Sekonik Cine 508 light meter... but he never had used a light meter before...we Detumined the HVX at 320 ASAat 24fps and with the M2 at 160ASA = that would give me 50%IRE at that stop... but its wasn't perfect but latter on I tell them I want this at a 2.8 at 60FPS and walk away...

"FILL" is a dirty four letter word on my sets. I try never to use it...

Looks Fing Awesome! can't wait, I have an hvx on order! man how is the sharpness? do you think the images with the M2 will hold up on a big projection screen? have the seen it yet? I did a varicamHD to 35mm filmout test and it looked fine. can't wait to try the hvx and m2!

This movie will be a must see for all of us here, great work and very inspirational!
Could you elaborate a little on the lighting settup for the latin cop indoor scenes?
I´m looking for that "hot and sweaty" look...

Vincent,

Did you have any problems with the handheld shots and the 35mm adaptor in place? The shots of the outdoor policeman chasing the guy. It looks all handheld, and I was wondering how well the adatpr held up to that kind of movement.

as far as sharpness I shot the stuff with out the M2 at -4 detal and the stuff with the M2 at +3 - +7 detail... but even with out I was suprised how sharp I could get the m2...I never used any diffusion with it since I was scared that It would get to soft.

Hand held was a little Silly my grips made me a shoulder mount out of a bunch of Cartilinis and baby C-stand arms... but I only used that in one Sceen the rest of the time I operated just like I would normaly. the Handheld in the alley way was ether on a 50m with the M2 or the Century Wide angle x.6

Vincent,
I noticed on one of the scenes (the cop jumpint over something), it looked like you had that slightly strobing "Gladiator" motion. Was that intentional, a compression artifact, or...? Does anyone know how to get that look? Is it a matter of slightly overcranking and a particular shutter angle?
P.S.: I downloaded the big file and watched it fullscreen. It really looks fantistic. Probably the most "filmic" thing I've seen so far (done with the HVX).

that Effect is just a fast Shutter Speed 1/1000 of a sec. some of it on a 300m some on a 50m and some on a Centry wide angle adapter...but all done in camera.

I cannot find the footage.

Is it on myspace?

I get this when I try to look at videos on your myspace page

"Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.

This error has been forwarded to MySpace's technical group."

Thanks,

Jack

Vincent, your beautiful footage has stuck in my mind for ages. Some of your images are the absolute best I've seen from the hvx. Good luck!
