Finally upgrading Rode shotgun

I couldn't afford my mkh60 when I got it, that's why they invented credit cards

If I were you, I'd score a AT4073a on eBay ( you could get one for $400 or below is my guess) then go buy the KTek KZep from Trew or the like.

HAHAHA... well then she adores me... she only says yes, that is what sucks, I actually have to be mature, and stuff... :)

ok, AT4073a it is fellows... ::bidding initiated::

BTW, I have a K-Tek boom and Zeppelin... the Zeppelin rocks though it is a pain to assemble... the boom is a bit short at 9' 2 and I am terrified of making noise with the internal cable...

so the AT and next up: Monitors... will have $300 to wards it by selling my 5.1 Klipsch Promedias... but I understand it is $800 level or bust....

Great that you have the zepplin and fishpole already, you are in good shape. I wouldn't worry about upgrading your hyper right away. I was actually quite impressed to listen to the schoeps vs. oktava side by side. They are way too close for the price difference. I am not saying that I regret my purchase, you get nicer highs, more intelligibility, bassy men don't sound tubby etc. but the oktava is a great value.

As far as monitors go, I waited months and months to upgrade and I finally settled on the JBL lsr4326 ($1000). They sound really great and they adjust themselves to your room. They network together and you can have a 5.1 setup by adding more units. Let me know if you want to know more! They are awesome!

I am also using a MixPre which I sort of regret getting instead of the 302 because I will loose a hundred bucks when I move up.... but there was no way to get it back when I did... I am afraid the AT shotty might be a bit of the same situation, but you said they hold their value very well right? Hehe, hate to do this, but should I proceed with no regrets? (third time I ask, I know)

I am quite happy with my setup but I am missing key components: I have no lavs... and I am sad to say no recorder either. Should have seen me yesterday thetered to my laptop + Tascam US-122 + in the park bench... not a good way to do things with kids running around... and it limits your mobility in a big way. But in the end I got a kick ass room-tone that I put together out of seven layers.

I remember listening to several comparisons of the Oktava against ~$1000 mics and I could not order it fast enough... that's a really big stroke of luck for people with budgets like mine...

Wow, that sounds like a nice set of Monitors to get Sane! But I am still a bit far away from the purchase.... probably further than I'd like to be...

You need to ask Oleg if you are worried. He owns both mics.

You will always lose money when you upgrade incrementally. The upside is that if you finance the more expensive thing, you lose money in interest. I went with the higher end mic in an attempt to attract the higher end jobs. It worked for me, but who knows. You have to spend money to make money they say.

true true... I thank you for taking the time to comment on this aspect of the purchase, it is a bit like baby sitting me, lol K... well I will as Oleg and unless he says some uber major negative stuff about the idea I will go ahead and bid strong...

Thank you Sane, and thank u too Shawneous

I would recommend not selling your NTG-1. It'd be nice to have a stunt spare. It's raining and you're worried? Bag the more expensive one and bust out the NTG-1. That's why I have both the Oktava and the se300b/CK93. Then in a few months when I pick up the Schoeps, I'll keep my existing ones. I'm probably going to try to pick up a 4073a sometime as a backup for when I don't want to risk my mkh60.

Shawn, mister Red level of investment, I barely can hold my current bag here bro... hehehe.... I would love to keep the Rode but it is wait or sell and buy the AT.... so I'll give this auction a try... if not I'll keep trying Ebay till I hit it...

My next investment might end up being that famous Directing class... one of them is being held at Raleigh Studios tomorrow and a friend of mine is going.. aghhh!!! 400 bones, but everyone speaks volumes of it...

I'll try to get the AT and hope to sell the NTG-1 at $200 even.... making it a $150 upgrade only... cross ur fingers heheh...

thanks a million guys! It is always nice to hear from both of you!

If your in the market for monitor consider the krk rokit line. Not expensive and good detail. They come in many sizes....the 8 inch probably the best one and theyre around 250$ a piece. Theyre powered so you dont need an amp.

Me too... I am a bit worried about the looks of the pictures posted though... they look a bit eerie... but it is the bad photography... hope it doesn't mean the mic is busted... :D

How well do these hold up? R they tough?

It works and looks flawless!!!

It sounds similar yet MUCH more realistic than the NTG-1.. it was a good investment!

BTW K-Tek is shipping my Zeppelin back to them and shiping me the new version all for free! I will ask for a lightly longet one since the AT is a touch too long for it.

Things are sounding better round here... :)

it is not as nice as the Oktava hypercardioid but if you need the pickup pattern it is well worth the trade-off... I won't be afraid of pulling out the shotty anymore...

I shall never get stuck on audio post for ever with a 15min short :)

well and hopefully I won't take as long next time I have to either heheh
