Finally upgrading Rode shotgun

I had it and I am Ebaying or selling to anyone interested my beloved Rode NTG-1

I also have an Oktava hypercardioid which I am keeping. I know it doesn't really matter too much if your mics match perfectly as long as you use the same mic throughout the same scene but I still would like to get close in their tone.

I asked a while back ad someone recommended an AT but I forget the exact model and I can't find it with the search option. Can anyone suggest what to get in the next price tier?
 
AT4073a is my price range is it not worth the upgrade from the Rode though? Meaning, should I wait till I can get right into the Sennheiser/Sanken?
 
I am waiting until I can get the sanken and just getting by with my hyper. I can't speak to what your production needs are. I do almost exclusively interiors. I just want the sanken because it does better in interiors than many shotguns.
 
I do lots of exteriors... and the Rode sounds good but I feel it is not as good as my Oktava so I try to use the hyper and I drive myself stoopid like that... :(

So I figure I need to not only be ok but feel good about my shotgun so I can use the different mics as they should be instead of trying to do thinks backwards

What mic is that link for? It doesn't say. Wait, well actually the links don't work anyway...

I am having problems with the player I think it crackles every second or so and the fottom 10% of the image is tretched? weitd... but I can still get the idea about the mic...

would really like to hear the uncompressed version though... and knowing what mic was used might also be helpful :D heheh...

but take ur time I have to go get some room tone right now anyway...

BTW, is that a somewhat wide shotgun pickup? I heard the other kids in the classroom quite a bit... though if it was camera mounted it might have been from the bounce back off the wall

I managed to delete the videos folder on my webserver... grand huh?

That is the schoeps cmc6u with mk41 hyper

It is on a boom, but most of the nat sound in that video is done with wireless (ew100 with sanken cos11) (The teachers were laved for b-roll, students were boomed)

All of the interviews are from the boomed schoeps. I laved them too as a safety, but I didn't use it.
 
eBay dude! Watch eBay and score yourself a deal. I got me an MKH60 for under $800! I was floored, that's a $1500 mic! I love it. Anyhow, just the other day I was bidding on an AT4073a for a backup shotgun and I didn't win it, but it went off auction for only $340 from a reputable seller.
 
ok so I should try to score an AT4073a... that is my budget...

so can you guys tell me if the upgrade is a waste and I should hold off till I can go for the $900 level at Ebay?
 
I think that it depends on the when and ifs of your budget. I can't be of much help I suppose, but I would get the 4073 for now. It will hold it's value well and you can have a backup later or sell it if needed. Do you have a zepplin already? I would say that is a major factor. Also there is a very good comparison of the two mics in the top 5 shotgun thread. I was going to buy the 4073 the first time I got a job shooting exteriors for decent money.

Yeah I concure. Even Oleg says it's a good mic (and he's a picky dude). Make sure to leave money in the budget for a full KTek setup. They've got good prices and excellent value!

Lol, I love it. I just had to sit down and explain to my wife why I *had* to have a Schoeps. Thankfully she remembered me making her watch Ty Ford's video about it and bought off on the whole thing :-). We should get together sometime Mike, we're not that far! Maybe we could organize a big Portland/Seattle DVXUser meeting somewhere in between, maybe Olympia or something.
 
Yea we should! wabbit lives in seattle too, but we have yet to meet. We have been talking about it!

I was hoping your wife wasn't going to put a hit out on me. That's what my wife said she'd do. I would like to point out that it WAS wabbit that told me that after the schoeps, his ears didn't like anything else (and wabbits have big ears).
