Finally making the SWITCH. Now I needs me a good advanced user guide.

After putting up with not being able to get enough out of Motion to create the ideas that are rolling around in my head, I finally purchased After Effects.

I'm so stoked to finally have a capable effects program.....just not stoked on the Adobe UI. Oh well.

I'm definitely going to get an advance techniques user guide. What are some of the books you'd recommend and those you wouldn't.

If it's the user interface your concerned about I would definitely recommend Adobe After Effects CS5 Classroom In A Book (http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-After-Effects-Classroom-Book/dp/0321704495). It provides very easy to follow lessons that will get you familiar with the Adobe way of thinking relatively quickly if you really commit yourself to it. I too came from Apple Motion background but now I can't image going back.In terms of advanced material, you might want to google After Effects Apprentice. I'm sure that will be plenty of reading to get you started at the very least.-B

It sounds like you should probably start at the beginning..

Classroom in a book is good but It's widely acknowledged that "After Effects Apprentice" by Trish & Chris Meyer is one of the best to get you going.

I agree with Phil.

This is a great starting point:

http://www.amazon.com/After-Effects-Apprentice-DV-Expert/dp/0240809386

Chris and Trish Meyers walk you through the UI and explain what things are for.

While aetuts and videocopilot are great, they don't teach a lot of the basics. If you need something specific done, those sites are great, but they don't cover 101 very well (though VC does have the Beginners Series which is helpful but not near as complete as the Meyers' course). The Meyers' are also the ones that teach AE on lynda.com I believe.

Thanks guys. I think that I'm going to go with Adobe After Effects CS5 Classroom In A Book first, then After Effects Apprentice for a rehashing and ingraining of AE, and then I'll probably just move to the tutorials for very specific needs.
