FS7: finally found the settings for waveform with 4K in viewfinder cine ie

Is the waveform monitor possible in 4K on the viewfinder?
I questioned this before, the answer was NO, and got the advice to buy a third part monitor, which I nearly did.

Being not a native English speaker makes it sometimes hard to understand the manual and the forum discussions.
And having a very complicated camera with a lot of different setting that somehow effect each other doesn't make it easier.

That is why it took so long to find out the waveform in 4K is possible. Found it on the sony forum (june 2015, by the inevitable Doug Jensen:-) )
Somehow I don't think I am the only one (at least 28 people do use the FS7 according to my last pole), so I'll repost the trick:
  • No Lut
  • Video output settings 4K/2K to HD convert is set for Letter Box
And voila a waveform monitor in the viewfinder. (4096x2160, 25p, xavc-i, slog3, cine ie).

Hi Publimix,

I believe that with the latest v3.0 firmware you can have the waveform up when LUTs are on. Previously you could only see the waveform with no LUTs (as you say) or with LUTs being baked in (!). v3.0 is supposed to make it behave like the F5/F55.

I don't personally have an FS7, but if it is like the F5/F55, that means either MLUTs 'OFF' on viewfinder and SDI2 (as you currently suggest), or MLUTs 'ON' on both viewfinder and SDI2. This makes things life much easier and means you don't have to spend your time viewing a flat, unadjusted log image when shooting log.

The only other important thing to note is that internal waveform and zebras display post-LUT values.

Hope that helps,

Ben

Exactly what Ben said! And seeing waveform displaying post-LUT values is useful is nowhere near if it would be displaying of underlying slog.
