FS7: Final Sony 100-400 (vs 50-300)

The wall will show lens' weaknesses.

My 2 cents verdict:
The Sony is sharper. (as the wall shows.)
But... the Sony is not made for the FS7 MK1 (lock focus works only on FS7 MKll and other camera's like A6500 and A7, autofocus on FS7 not fast)
The Sony is lighter and is an e-mount lens. But.... it is packed with electronisc that doesn't work on film camera's. It is a typical still lens.
The Sony has an longer reach. But the Nikkor is F4.5
The Sony costs about 2900 euro, the Nikkor costed a lot 40 years ago but now you pay 400 euro for a good one.

The weight and the comfort of native e-mount is a good thing.

Hi Doug, BTW In Russia they don't need long lenses

Only asbestos underware

Ha, ha I was shooting a SpaceX launch today and someone showed me on their phone an even better handheld video than that from a launch this week in Kazakhstan. No rules over there. Must be nice. We all agreed we'd probably get that close to the launch pad if we were allowed. Of course, I'd wear a NASCAR Nomex suit and helmet and tie myself down with tent stakes in case it blew up.

(notice my custom panhandle now in service)

Very cool Doug,

How close it that, hard to tell with DOF? And the 280 looks like it is moving up in your rankings? Ah FL weather.

I was about 400 yards away from the rocket a couple of hours before launch shooting with the Z280. The Z280 is perfect for that kind of ENG b-roll. Light and fast with a 17x lens but still shooting 4K XAVC-I.
But then I had to move 4 miles away and whip out the F55 and Canon 200-400 for the actual launch. I like the shot of the booster tumbling as it comes down. Reminds me of the ending to Koyaanisqatsi. The wind speed where I was at launch was over 25 mph so the shots are not as steady as I would have liked, but it seems I have solved the side-to-side wobble issue that I talked about in another thread by removing the VCT plate. I was supposed to shoot this launch from the top of the VAB but winds were gusting at over 50 mph up that high so NASA wouldn't allow it at the last minute.

Very cool being that close, all the detail in the launch is great. Wonder how how the fail rate is on rocket recovery?
Can see why you could not shoot off the top of VAB, 50mph of wind, that would be tough to shoot in with your long gear.
