Final Mix Setup

cool thanks... yeah, i just realised i could run PTools on my 410, but it just takes the fun out of the argument! haha! yeah, to pay 1k for timecode weirds me out...

thanks for the preamps... whats ballpark price on those?

Tigeba, I would be interested to learn what you can do easily with ProTools LE that you think is impossible or difficult to do with Nuendo? Hell from my experience, Cubase SX (and Logic) are both more powerful than LE. And I have recorded tons of music over many years, but I don't see it. So please let me know where I'm getting this wrong. I mean I've seen some pretty big post houses switch from a TDM system to Nuendo, I have to think that it's capable.

I believe you misunderstood my post. My argument there was any host based system -vs- TDM, not PT LE.

A few things that I do all the time that are not possible (as far as I know) with Nuendo or PT LE, or other host systems. A lot of the issues are related to tracking, not mixing. Like being able to create a cue mix for a bunch of musicians without having delays. I don't believe you can do a hardware insert on a host system, which is a drag if you have some decent outboard gear.

Nice. That was a huge missing feature for a lot of host systems. Not much can be done about latency tho, except to hope for signifigantly faster computers :)

Well yes and no, regarding latency. I mean a PT TDM rig is essentially the same, the difference being that all of the hardware is designed to work at peak efficiency with with the system. That's the benefit of a proprietary system. I you have Nuendo on a mac and you use a FW410 as your audio interface, you're going to have latency. There's nothing you can do about it; number one it's firewire instead of PCI and number 2, M-audio's drivers, while good on PCs, suck on Macs. But if you use an RME Hammerfall or MOTU interface you can get latency down to under five milliseconds - which is essentially unnoticeable.

I that is your optimal latency. Once you start mixing and start adding plugins the latency grows significantly as you have to increase your buffer. 5ms is way more than unnoticable, it is unusable for monitoring. Think about the complaints regarding the delay on the DVX, and I believe that is 2ms?

Well the latency issue will only affects monitoring when tracking. With my PCI MOTU interface I cannot hear any latency at all - none, so I'm assuming I'm at 1ms or less. But you can still track at 5ms or less.

As far as mixing goes, Nuendo has full PDC so your not hearing any latency during the mixing stage at all.

just to add my 5c, Nuendo 3 has the capability to set up "audition" outputs and build individual cue mixes for multiple musicians... the audition feature even has buttons on the tool bar to activate sends....

yeah, latency is a drag, but really, we ain't never gonna totally kill that. There will always be some... even if its tiny.

Im talking more from a post-production sound point than a music point, so tracking large amounts of sources isnt that important. Im usually running maximum 2 mics.

I recommend ditching the M-Audio card and going with a MOTU 2408mkIII. I am running Nuendo 3 with Waves Diamond, and loads of vst instruments(Stylus, Atmospheres, Absynth,etc.). I also run GigaStudio3 with loads of samples(too many to mention).

My biggest recommendation is on the front end. The preamps. I am using a Universal Audio 2-610, an Avalon 737sp, 2 Empirical Labs Distressors, and I am about to buy a pair Neve strips. Thats where the balls are at. Great computer and great software don't do as well without good preamps.

guydoingmusic, are you on a Mac? I have a similar setup as you, minus the preamps and virtual instruments. If you are on a mac, I have a question for you.

Steve

I'm not guydoingmusic, but I also have an almost identical setup and I'm running it on a Mac (G5).

You will love the Neve preamps. I would really love to pick up one of the Vintech 1073 clone units for the EQ.

Matt, do you have any problems with your MK3 not being found by the Mac every time. I have to sometimes (quite often actually) shut down, pull the audiowire cable , wait a few moments, plug the cable back in, and then reboot. I'm on a G4 dual 1ghz running OS 10.3.8. I didn't have these problems with OS 10.2.6 and the old MOTU drivers. Just curious if others are having problems. The other problem I'm having is I'm getting hum in my speakers from the analog 1+2 outputs of the MOTU. It's not loud, but is audible when there's nothing playing. For power, I have my computer and audio system on a dedicated circuit running into battery backups (Triplites). Haven't quite figured that one out yet, so if you have advice, let me know.

Thanks,
Steve

No clue, I had problems with the M-Audio gear (a few different pieces) but ever since I got the MOTU stuff it's been smooth sailing.

Yeah, when the MOTU loads up properly it has been fine working with it. I think it's great value for what it offers. So, I've been happy with it, just trying to figure out those two small issues.
