final cut pro version 6 mask - trying to hide part of frame in a moving shot

Hi,

I'm almost done with a promo video for a massage therapist. After weeks of working on this, she told me she doesn't like the opening shot because her belly is showing. She has asked me if I can mask it somehow. I know there is a way to do this in Final Cut 6, but I can't figure it out. Any suggestions?

If not, I'll just find some other B Roll!

Thanks!

- Tom

I think this is better asked in the Final Cut section... even though you reference 6, I'm sure the 7 users can help...

Despite it being in 'cinematography'... and being 'FCP 6'...

I'd say make a clip with just a small section of masking on a nearby section of the woman's teeshirt. Composite the original with the masked clip, and shift masked clip slightly to the right, to cover the slight gap between the teeshirt and the woman's pants, to cover the sliver of 'belly' that shows while she moves forward.

Really depends on the shot- but sure you can just scale the frame up to crop out the parts you don't want to see. Do this in the motion tab. You can keyframe the position as well if it's moving around.

Hi Noah,

Thanks for answering. Did you see the video above? I can't really scale it without destroying the shot.

I think the mask thing is going to be hard as well.

I'm wondering if there is some other option?

Probably something you need to do in after effects. Pretty straight forward there, you could pretty much track and color that skin so it didnt look like flesh. Not so easy in FCP. I dont use motion, but I guess it would have some tools? Find a friend with after effects if you dont own a copy.

Yeah, I can't imagine this in FCP. AE shouldn't be too hard. Might not even have to rotoscope much. Just change the flesh color to a black color. Might look like an undershirt without much trouble.

Outside of your question, the shot is just framed really weird. The flat lighting and yellow white balance means you have a lot of other problems going on with that shot. Then you have some guy with a Hairy back that just looks so uncool.

Personally I would trash that whole scene and do a reshoot. Get some nice lighting in there and frame your shots different.

Thanks for the help, people! It looks like I need AE, which I don't have.So I think I'll go to plan b- find some other b roll.-Tom
