Final Cut Pro P2 Preview = Crapped out

I am having a p2 preview failure with two drives in FCP on my Mac Book Pro. The bizarre thing is when I copy the exact same files to my OWC pocketdrive or desktop the preview function in FCP functions perfectly. The same is true on my friend's mac book. Any ideas?

I have already deleted the .plist files, the preferences and fixed all permissions.

Do you think it is the drives or FCP?

Any help or insight is appreciated.

Cheers

have a friend who is having a similar issue.
how are those drives connected to your machine. what are those drives?

The drives I am using are the wiebetech RaidTech800 as a raid1
dual 500GB SAta drives @ 7200RPM
I have been connecting via FW800 but have tried via 9pinto6pin and USB = no luck

The other drive is a Rocstor 1 TB FW external FW800 connected via FW800/400 or USB = no luck

The drive that actually works is a OWC pocketdrive connected by FW800.

I am running a dual core Mac Book Pro with the latest OS and 5.1.4 FCP

Any ideas are super appreciated.

Cheers,
Travis

Did you reformat the drives before using them? Do you know what format they are in? When you say preview failure...do you mean the P2 volumes are not available for preview?

Many of the cheap drives are formatted FAT32 which can be a problem but sounds like your Raid 1 would obviously not be like that.

I would guess if you can mount the volumes on another drive, then its the drives, not FCP. You could also download the free version of "P 2 L o g" and see if that works which could help isolate the problem.

All drives have been reformatted to Mac OS extended journaled....I will try to download the P2 log to see if that sheds some light on things.

Thanks

2 things to try.
1 only hook one device up at a time. so just try one of the problem drives.
Also trash the thumbnail cache on your machine.

Are the drives close to full? Lots of users of report a similar issue when daisy chaining FW drives and also with using larger drives such as the ones you listed. Acces speeds slowdown as the drives fill up and can get bogged down to the point where the cache and buffer cant not maintain the data stream required to preview a P2 file. Editing is a different story since it doesnt take as much processing to view and work with already converted P2 files.
